Gran Turismo 4 480p, 1080i options? Check this.

Not jumping to conclusions, and after a recent interview saying its not in, whats the deal with the info on this page:

Its states (within Japanese text) on the GT4 spec list: 480p, 1080i, 5.1 channel (would be intro only on PlayStation2 - Polyphony aren't THAT good), and 1-2 player LAN and something about 6 player too. Perhaps like GT3. And that a BB-unit is used, perhaps for the LAN mode as now we don't have i-link. I guess the 1080i could be the Photo Mode, but 480p was still talked about in IGN interviews, and they said it wouldn't be in.

Whatdya reckon? They definetly said the game would have no progressive/hdtv options..

Goto 'ABOUT' and click on the third Japanese text tab that comes up.

Can anyone on here read Japanese and translate it?

          1080i? Fuuuck.

How can the PS2 render that high? I'd bet it renders the 3D at 480p to a texture, scales that up to fill the screen in 1080i mode and only the HUD and menus are drawn at that high res.

          Nutters. What about 720p?

I'd never of thought that was possible on a PS2. The thing only has 4Mb of VRAM!

Be interested to see if they have had to drop to a lower mip on the textures when in Hi Vision mode.

does the ps2 even have a big enough frame buffer for such a high resolution?

Apparently there is very little in the way of detail loss, and the game still retains its 60fps display. This is obviously coming from other forum users, some of which can't tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps, but they says its amazing, and doesn't drop frames.

There is no 720p as it would be more intensive (progressive image against an interlaced image).

Cool huh? Oh, and here is a pic of it running in 16:9 1080i :

You'd need to do some filtering to the texture for it to look "right" scaled up like that. There's a few diff methods but all the good ones would just make it look ****.

a 640*480 image scaled to fit a higher res is still just a 640*480 image and the PS2 would still have to fill 1080i worth of pixels anyway.

Resolution is governed by fillrate more than 3D "ooomph"

Definitely some fancy jiggery pokery going on if this is the case. You've got bugger all vram on PS2 so it must be scaled up, not true 1080. Impressive none the less.
