Is that still true? I get the impression that Maya has overtaken it by now.
I'd also heard that since the Maya price drop 3DSMax sales went through the floor.
Anyway, since he knows Max already I'd still recommend Maya next.

the problem I have with learning maya, is that my computer is too **** to handle it. Plus, I don't have enough money to buy a new pc because I'm a tester and have no money whatsoever.

        Good reason.
I remember having to demo with Maya on a ****e laptop - took half the presentation just to launch the thing.

To be honest the program that you learn is not the issue. You need to be a good all round artist both with a pencil and with a mouse. Being good at Maya does not make you a good artist. Software is constantly changing (XSI/Modo/Silo are the 'new thing' at the moment) but the skills are what counts and make you stand out.

Check out the graphics forums like Cgtalk and gfxartist. There are lots of people in the same boat and you get to see the quality of work you need to produce to be on top.

cheers man. thats cool. I think I'll just stick with max for a little longer as I'm currently working on a new environment. Hopefully it'll be super nice. The trees are really pissing me off though.

Yeah, show something. CGtalk.com is definitely the place to go, but you might get some useful comments here, too, as there are apprently some pro game artists here (including me...)

Another possibility would be smaller companies producing mobile (phone) games. Lower budgets, lower tech/ old school (ie. 2d) game structures and smaller teams mean talent, hard work and enthusiasm could make up for the missing experience and not being super-specialized in a specific field.

Aye, make sure you're as good with low-poly models as beautifully lit 3D environments.

If you fancy trying Maya I think the 'personal learning' edition is still totally free.

I have the relevent 2 degrees (including an MA in game design) but even that won't save me now!
Only 2 Degrees? Pfft. You need at least 6 these days (sarcasm off) . Who'd have thought that to secure a job as a computer artist you'd need 2 degrees? Something like this isn't rocket science, heck to be a brain surgeon you need only the one. I think Schizophrenia or whatever his name is might be confusing you for someone who wants to work at microsoft games/nintendo/sony on something like ?100k + a year and even then, I highly doubt that you'd need two degree, unless your first one is something stupid and pointless not to mention completely irrelevant, like history or geography

What a lot of ****e. You don't need 2 degrees, 10 years exp, and be under 25. There are loads of way's to get your foot in the door. One of my friends worked as a games tester at Rockstar North a couple of years back, many testers become game designers, and artists. This is one route you could take!

Send you portfolio/showreels to all game companys. Once sent, leave it a few day's then follow it up with a phone call. Also make sure the work in your portfolio demonstrates something different, for example don't do something cliched.

There are many company's taking on talented artists, regardless of there experience or qalifications. It's all about how good your work is. Also, if you come from another creative background such as Multimedia Design, Graphic Design, or Web Design this will definately help.

If you want to get into the games industry that much then, work hard, don't give up, and be original. Oh, and give Szczepaniak a hard slap for expressing such negativity!

All that 2 degrees stuff is bollocks. A 35 year old friend got a job with Sony about a year ago doing all the game concept stuff (characters/envionments etc.) Before that he had a job doing the same stuff, working on (now defunct) The Lion King game. Before that, he was on the dole for about 8 years!
Similar thing happened to another friend, he worked on Acclaims Shadowman (oops!). Neither had experience, just a massive amount of raw talent.

If, as you say, you are already a tester, then why do you feel you have to move companies to be able to become a 3D Artist? Surely you would be better talking to the Artists within the company that you work for, getting advice from them, showing them that you are interested in the work, and more importantly showing them that you can do the work by getting them to assign you small tasks that you could complete in your own time, atleast then you could be contributing to the product. Once you are doing that then you are half way there, as they'll be including you in what they do, they'll be calling on you to do more work for them during busy periods of the project, and before you know it, they'll have an experienced person ready to move into the department!!

As others have said, a good portfolio/CV etc will help you when applying to other companies but if you are already in one, it would be much easier to work your way up into the role you aspire to where you are, than attempting to role change by moving companies!

                              Good luck though!
