But surely you don't read solely to get opinions for purchases? Why I like magazines like Edge is for the quality of the writing in their articles, the exclusive interviews and special features such as 'making of....'.
Until I can get these things from the net, then I'm always going to buy magazines in some form.
Anyway, back on topic....I believe the idea that no game can score a 10/10 is nonsensical. What's the point of having it if a game can't score it? It just becomes an 'out of nine' scoring system.

I haven't seen so many people bicker over numbers and semantics since an incredibly dull philosophy seminar some time back - come on, we're all gamers, show some solidarity and don't quibble over the relationship between sign and signification.
In defence of master chief however, the relationship between the sign (i.e. the word as a collation of symbols, phenomes etc.) and that which is signified (the mental 'image' of what the word conjures) is completely arbitrary. Thus, master chiefs' definition of perfect is as valid as any other submitted; words are essentially meaningless symbolic 'monads' that gain significance only in the implicit socio-cultural matrix that dominates our commonly subscribed to linguistic framework. Now lets stop arguing over boring **** and talk about games we'd give a 10 to - bugger the notion of perfection.
So, I think R-Type's a ten.........
P.S. All that Saussure stuff I paraphrased is from memory. so may be a wee bit off the centre...but I'm sure you all get my point

It does seem like we're making a slight big deal out of this. I mean, it's fair to assume nothing can be 100% perfect to everyone, which would imply that a 10/10 score would be impossible. But that depends on the criteria the individual gamer chooses... 10/10 might not necessarily mean perfect, just simply a game that manages to achieve that level of quality in the eyes of that gamer. I truely would rate Goldeneye 10/10 in retrospect, but I'm not trying to say it's perfect, it's just such a quality title that I feel any lower would be an injustice.
But **** it, abolish game ratings and lets just enjoy this stuff.

Depends what you mean by early. I'd rather play Stunt Car racer than Pong.
But 2D games in the 16-bit generation have definately aged much better than 3D games from the 32-bit generation. Some N64 and Saturn classics aside, I'd say that most of the 3D games from that era are consigned to the bin now.

IMO, theres like 3 or 4 things a game must do earn a 10/10.
- Play extremly well and be really enjoyable (funnn)
- Be able to maintain its enjoyment/quality after X amount of years.
- Influence and change the gaming market to some degree.
Now in my books, 10/10 games are, Halo, GTA3, MGS, Resident Evil and Mario 64 (I've forgotten some other ones, probably).
In my opinion of course.

A classic is a game that stands the test of time, being 3D doesnt help, but goldeneye didnt stand the test of time very well.
