Dvdmike - I have been searching for Marvel vs Capcom for some time. I get the impression its something I am going to stumble on by accident one day when I am out shopping!
As for garou on dc, avoid it like the plague due to smaller sprites and awful out of sync sound. Go for the jap ps2 version if you want it.
I've actually never had any problems with the xbox d pad for fighters, i'd go so far as to say that its great infact, far superior to the ps2 and the dc d pads.
Best fighters? All down to personal preference but you can't go wrong with the following:
SF Anniversary/ SF3 on xbox
Cap vs Snk 2 on xbox/dc
Guilty gear x2 - Xbox
Garou - ps2
King of fighters 1999 dream match (really kof 98, the best!) - dc
Vampire chronicles - dc

Do you only want recommendations for PAL games? If not you could consider Melty Blood for the ps2, it's not out yet but the PC game is really nice so this should be as well.
I also 2nd KOF XI, best KOF in years. And Garou for being one of the best fighters ever, it's only downside is the small number of characters.

Ok 2d fighters i love
Last blade 2 - i think just has the perfect balance between combos and countering
guilty gear x series - admitidly the more versions they release the less i like it but when i first played it i was amazed
King of fighters xi - my fav kof game ever
Melty blood- released next week for the ps2 i have the pc versions and if the ps2 is a more polished version of that i will be very happy
Killer instinct -not to every ones taste but i love it
Rumble fish - pretty decent ps2/arcade fighting game would be nice if they converted the sequel to the ps2 though
Weaponlord - snes fighter vastly underated in my opinion gave me blisters trying to perform the combo fatalitys
Matrimelee-neo geo and now a ps2 pretty decent 2d fighter perhaps not quite as in depth as most but still great fun
Fist of the north star -arcade ok i have not played it but i know i will love it and i pray it gets a ps2 version

Originally posted by moonwhistleOn a side note, I never understood the appeal of joysticks / arcade sticks, technically they are the way beat 'em ups are meant to played but I simply cannot use them to save my life. The only thing I'll use is either a ps2 pad or a saturn pad, they both have perfect d-pads and this really is the business end of fighter control in my view. I bought a DC arcade stick as I felt I should at least try to use one, but never have I experienced a bigger piece of ****. It looks lovely but that big spongy joystick is a nightmare, feels more like analogoue than digital. I also tried the ASCI FT pad and thought that was rubbish too, suprisingly bad for a dedicated controller. Rant off /
You cannot expect to just pick up a stick and get used to it straight away, it will take time, but if you can get used to them you will be better off.
Personally i find Fighters on a pad impossible, but i guess this is because ive only ever played on sticks.
combos involving various buttons are much easier on a stick imo due to the fact you can access the 4-6 buttons alot easier than on a pad.

I've always swapped the medium punch and kicks on pads like the dcs and xbox for the heavies and find myself never using medium strength attacks.
Unless its a button configuration like the saturns, you can wave goodbye to effective capcom fighting. Having the heavy attacks on the shoulder buttons is acceptable in some character instances but with characters who teleport or have other three button commands eg, zangiefs lariat, the pads are useless in default setting.

With joysticks i suck, but ever since the snes and sf2 the pads been the way i play. I attemped joystick play in the past but i'm nowhere near as good.
It annoys me when others accuse you of not being hardcore or purist because you didnt learn your trade at the arcades.
Play the way you want. Infact play how you play best. There shouldnt be an elitist view that by using joysticks your more highly skilled.

I do begrudge the fact that I appear part of a dying breed though. When SFII first came out on the SNES me and one of my mates used to play it religiously and were roughly the same skill level which meant that most of our matches were quite closely contended. I used to love having someone to play with on a regular basis.
Time has moved on unfortunately. Everyone I immediately work with has a 360 and Live and most of my friends do but wont play anything other than Oblivion or GRAW.
Am I really part of a dying breed that can enjoy the simple but sometimes complex pleasures of a 2d Beat Em up?

I am praying FOTNS makes it to ps2. It should since its sammy/sega developed and theres great support and hype for this fighter (a rare thing these days).
If it is never comes out on a console, it would be a crime!
