Their best bet for this approach would be to evolve on how SoR4 did it with high-res comic book art. Maybe get Marvel artists themselves providing the cells. They could use SSF2 Turbo HD Remix as a guide on how not to do it.
SoR4??? Yikes! No thanks. Now THERE'S overrated pixel art, to go with an overrated game.

Agree with you about HD Remix being sh1te though.

I’m only talking about the technicalities behind the art. SoR4 art isn’t pixel art. That’s my point. Pixel art looks **** on anything other than a 240p capable display. 480i almost gets away with it, but not quite.

HD Remix looked terrible because they simply replaced the sprites. You can’t do that. Everything needs completely refactoring by animators. By all means retain the important/signature key-frames, but then rework everything else around them.

It’s a shame we’ve not seen any 2D games with extensive combo book art done in UHD. The MvC series is perfect for it.

Given they don't want to anchor the games directly to the MCU films (rightfully so), any future entry should go all in on the Guilty Gear visual approach. It would fit Capcom's designs perfectly whilst tying the Marvel characters more strongly to their comic routes if done right. UMvC3 was closer than MvCI's awful stylings but in the absence of pixel art it'd be best to steer down that visual route.

          Completely disagree.

Although I don't agree with dD's pixelart summary, I do quite like the idea of a Marvel Super Heroes with artwork done by Marvel artists:

I'd still take the pixel art in Capcom games at their upscaled HD worst over anything in SoR4. SoR4 looks like the worst of Flash and Clipart.

It's funny. It was reported back in the day (if I recall correctly) that Marvel and Capcom often clashed on the art direction used for these fighters, so I do wonder if that would've been Marvel's stylistic preference. I love the Akiman/Bengus art influence that Capcom went with but it all clearly leans more towards the manga/anime side of things.

It's subjective, of course, but having played SoR4 a fair bit this year, I really like the design and think each of the sprites have a load of character, especially for primarily voiceless henchmen.

However, any excuse to post this tat up that I banged out one lunchtime:

It's almost here - out next week (digital).

Focus on X-Men vs. Street Fighter (Japanese trailer).

Focus on Marvel vs Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes (Japanese)

For me, it's not so much whether I like it or dislike it... I guess what I'm saying is that I can see artistic merit in doing this, using a technique like what ArcSys are doing for their recent games. Like I think you might be able to achieve something unique that pushes the visuals in a direction we haven't yet seen.

Whereas for MvC3/Infinite... I just felt they didn't achieve anything. Funnily enough I had the same problem with SF5, which while visually distinct from SF4 really felt like another crack at the same whip. Conversely SF6 is a leap into a different visual language, just like Alpha was over 2, and III was over Alpha.
