Originally posted by jammii couldnt be bothered with all this crap so i just went out and got a 1080p LCD, and as iv said before 1080i will look better then 720p for downscaled 1080p material or go by a hardware scaler (which the xbox360 doesnt have its just software based and also 360 only upscales to 1080p) it will come in handy for all your SD tv needs aswell.
the 360 can upscale *and* downscale to 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p (with the exception of DVD movies) over Component, regardless of what resolution the game is in, and will also support a wide range of other resolutions over VGA.
The issue here is that the PS3 cannot upscale 720p content to 1080i/p, which is an issue in the US where HDTVs supporting 1080i but not 720p are common. Most PS3 games are 720p, thereby causing a problem.
Here in the UK, we have the HD-ready specification, which specifies all HD-Ready screens must support 720p and 1080i. The US has no such specification. So it's not an issue to us here in the UK.
Your advise of buying a costly hardware scaler is misguided, firstlyy because they are expensive, secondly because there should be no need.

So the scaling problems occur with Blu-ray as well? LMAO.
This is the big trojan horse for Blu-ray and could potentially make or break it and so far:
- It won't run it in 720p, the resolution of the vast majority of HDTVs out there at the moment.
- They bundle it with a ****ing composite connection. I don't know if anyone else has seen the PS3 running through composite, but it's horrible, and for some reason has a ton of overscan.
- They throw in Talladega Nights with apparently has a very poor transfer, and isn't really the one to show off the format anyway. Why don't they throw in Spider-Man 2 which is Sony Pictures' big gun? They did it for UMD but it's not even on the release list for Blu-ray. Meanwhile the freebie with the 360 HD DVD comes with a reference quality transfer.
Basically you're ****ed unless you have a 1080p TV. 720p and you can't watch movies in HD and 1080i and you can't play games. Great.

Phil Harrison mentions this issue in the new video interview on IGN. He basically dodges the question about whether or not it can be fixed, says they're aware of the problem, and says "these people will still be able to get the experience the designers intended."
I'm sure the people with 1080i TVs are very happy about that. Arrogant prick...
