Set it in a different time period, or here's an idea, not in an American city.
Ahem, what about Vice City or The Godfather (no gansta rap, different time period) or GTA London and The Getaway (not American cities). Plus numerous others.

You must enjoy getting things wrong in this thread. Clearly GTA style games aren't your bag, so I'd avoid trying to sound like an authority on the subject. It's just cringingly bad.

Although Crackdown appears to be set in the US due to the accents, the city is nothing like a typical US city. In fact, for the Japanese and Asian release the main character is changed which makes the whole game appear like a futuristic Asian city. Plus the height of the city makes a substantial difference to the way the game looks and plays.

And Crackdown isn't full of 'Gangsta' rap. I heard more electronica and alternative rock than anything else.

And AFAIK the lead character is the first black main character in a game who isn't a gang member since......Urban Chaos back in 1999. Which for a game MS are hoping will establish another 360 exclusive franchise is quite a brave move.

Crackdown's token effort visually, - a black line around the characters and gaudy colours do nothing to make it look different, they just make it look ugly, in my opinion.
Oh come on, that's such a **** argument. Anyone can deride anything by simply playing down the changes. How about this: 'DS games are completely unoriginal. They're just the same but with stupid stylus control.'

See, it's easy. It's also cheap, completely wrong and well below the standards of anyone who admires videogames for what they are, not just simply derides them for not filling their own particular needs.

I'm gonna have to throw another predictable 2p in. I'm not much of a fan of GTA, i enjoyed mucking around on the 1st and 3rd ones but I couldnt be bothered with the missions. I was really looking forward to this...

After spend around 8 hours downloading the demo and staying up a bit too late, I must admit.... I freaking love it, it's brilliant, fun, awesome coolness. Honestly, im so damn impressed with it and the possibilitys it presents. I've not played co-op yet but plan to late on this evening. I was just having a gas jumping around buildings, capturing the supply points and finding the orbs. I've not really had much of a problem with the lock-on system, although I will admit that it needs to loose the lock on corpses a bit quicker. The level of detail and design in the environment is just, just, agggghhhhh BRILLIANT!!

I can't wait to just while away the hours bouncing from building to building while shooting people in the face

Crackdown for me plays more like a platformer than a gta clone - you are always jumping around seeking higher ground, searching out for secrets etc etc ... in fact I have spent little time in the vehicles even though they handle pretty well.

Put it this way, the last game that I felt immersed me in a city in such a way was Jet Set Radio Future ... whether its the cel-like shading or the quasi futuristic city setting I don't know.

I must say GTA doesnt really do it for me either I gave up on them after vice city as I found it all pretty boring but I am interested in Crackdown due to the coop side of things. The demo seemed pretty good although I am not 100% sold on the graphic style.

I dont think thats very fair and its not not really giving people here much credit is it? Speaking for myself if something is rubbish im not going to lie and say otherwise just to justify an extra. Personally my Halo 3 interest level hovers somewhere around zero though id imagine im not amongst the norm on that one.

I'm the same. After number 2, Halo 3 is gonna have to show up at my door with chocolates, flowers, a grovelling apology and a weekend in Paris before I start lusting after it.
Crackdown looks aceness, and more enjoyable than GTA for me, especially as it has co-op.

I'm the same, I love Halo, but I'd rather wait for the main course rather than the starter, so playing the BETA has no interest to me.

I'm really looking forward to the Crackdown experience having played the demo yesterday. One of those games I can dip in and out of quite nicely, and have plenty of fun!

GTA is the worst series ever IMO. It stinks of rank fannies. This sounds as fresh as a freshly baked musical bap however. Can't wait to start throwing fools.

Oh nice one, not tried climbing the agency building yet, I'm going to do that right now, need to get my agility up first though!

Amazing, I haven't done any car kicking yet, I'll get started on that too!! This game has endless possibilities!!

Just remeber kids, the leveling up is accelerated in the demo. I'd like to know by what factor as beefing your dude up seems a bit easy at the mo.

                        "Automatically Amazing"

Very impressed with this demo, I even like the stylized cel shading, something I usually don't like in media.

Did I mention anyone around here? It's perfectly fair. Managing a videogame shop I am more than aware that the vast majority of my customers have pre-ordered crackdown for the halo 3 beta invite alone. Stop being so touchy!!

It doesn't mean they 'want to like it' though, does it?

Apologies if my post came across as touchy as i didnt mean it to be . I dont deny that many people will order Crackdown based on the H3 invite alone. Id just imagine many of them will be pleasantly surprised at the enjoyable experience Crackdown provides. Its not a bad game therefore i dont believe people will have to force enjoyment out of it.

It may. Some people will want to justify spending ?50 on a demo.
