Ah - ok, so they're just probably shifting the last 5 frames (10 fields) over.

I'm just going by menu speeds and other games HD vs SD 50hz.

Is it possible to connect an EU PS3 via component to an NTSC TV?

      It depends on the programming:

      e.g.

      Normal
HD game HD TV: character programmed to take 1 sec to jump. Console renders 60 frames for the animation and displays it in 1 sec.

      Juddery
HD game 60Hz SD TV: Console renders 30 frames, and shows it in 1 sec

      Juddery
HD game 50 Hz SD TV: Console renders 25 frames, and shows it in 1 sec.

      Juddery and Slow:
HD game, 50 Hz TV: Console renders 30 frames, shows it in 1.2 sec.

        50hz displays can't show 60fps only 50fps. Hence the "juddering" in RR7.

Yeah, it uses the same component cable as the PS2.

            Cheers, that?s what I thought

In that case this IS an issue. Maybe not for every game but for things like Virtua Fighter 5 where 60fps is 60 opportunities to input commands (regardless of the speed the game is running at) is a problem.

It sure is an issue....I can't remember which title it was on xbox 1 but i'm pretty sure there was a whole thing about 50hz players not being able to play against 60hz players.......so they were seperated onto different servers.

This is probably the real reason why some titles are locked onto regional servers on the PS3.....and also why a number of xbox 360 titles are 60hz only. (ie Xbox Live)

60z HD users and 50Hz SD users on Resistence and Motorstorm seem to be playing fine.

If that hasn't been PAL optimised you could be looking at PS1 Tekken level disastery !!!

                    Optimisation wouldn't matter.

50 frames per second is still 10 less potential input frames to be used.

Yeah I know I meant in terms of general sluggishness and borders ! I take it no borders due to this 568i or whatever it is though ???

I haven't seen any 50hz SD content running myself and have read conflicting reports on whether the games are bordered or not.

If they do run unbordered I would be interested to know where the extra 96 lines are coming (NTSC displays can't be overscanning that much surely?)

Any 60hz game can be made to run in 50hz just by switching the resolution and refresh rate. The problem is that it takes more CPU to run at a pal resolution and the game ends up slower , combined with the fact the game will of been programed for the animations and everything else to work at 60hz. They put the borders on the screen so there are a few less lines to render thus gaining a little bit of extra processing power that so the slowdown is reduced, but then yu still have all the other timing issues in place.

If you can imagine putting on an old record that was cut to be played at 45RPM (the 60hz of records) if you put that on your record player and then set the speed to 33RPM (50hz) then it is gonna sound of slow n ****
A fully optimised game should be reprogrammed to compensate for all of these things.

*Disclaimer, this may actually be totally wrong, but this is how I've always understood it*

The borders are there on PAL conversion because NTSC pixels are rectangular shape, where as PAL pixels are square shaped.

16.67% slowdown occurs on PAL because the last 5 frames of the original NTSC animation are deferred to the following second.

My new HDMI > DVI lead came today. Finally, get to see my PS3 in HD.
A few of page back i mentioned i couldn't get my PS3 to conncet to my
Dell 2007WFP. Using a standard HDMI > DVI. Seems it wasn't handshaking
or not fully digital. Anyway, if anyone else, is trying to connect a Monitor
with HDCP, using DVI. This lead work great...!
