Wii - what is keeping the demand so high?

Sorry to break up the 'my console is better than yours' discussion but by using some sort of common sense, surely Nintendo should just open up a new factory or something?

I know it isn't quite as simple as that but I read that Sony has built a new factory a while back for faster and more effective production even if the console isn't receiving the demand the Wii has.

Do you ever get that felling that Nintendo are taken by surprise about the demand for the Wii that they didn't think they needed to make that many systems?

According to financial briefing that Iwata held two weeks ago, Nintendo has just contracted* second manufacturer last month, and there should be more units available by end of this month. This is probably true, as during last two weeks, Japanese shipments have seen 30 percent increase in size.

      * Nintendo has never owned its own factories. Instead they have contracted production to various companies around the world.

At least Iwata said so during financial briefing. They never excepted to Wii caught this fast, and all plans were made accordingly.

Anybody else still buy consoles for the games they want to play on them, or are those days gone?

Oh, my wife and I played Wario Ware last night for 45 minutes. First time since February 23rd. XBox? Umm, a few months ago too. PS2? The other day trying to fall in love with Okami. PS3? I'm married and summer's coming (Ico 3 and LBP may sway me but I still can't afford the expenditure at the moment). 360? Nothing quite there to tempt me yet. And you all keep saying they break a lot.

Anything else would be rather stupid imo.
I bought a Wii for Wii Sports, I bought my PS2 for Time Crisis 2 and Chikyuu Boueigun and I'm tempted to buy an Xbox 360 for Chikyuu Boueigun 3 and Bioshock and a PS3 for Time Crisis 4.

Buy a DS Lite with Ouendan 2, Hotel Dusk, and the Phoenix Wright games. Then tell me you're bored.

I think it was a mixture of both being taken by surprise, and also not wanting to overestimate production, they got pretty badly burned with GC manufacturing back in 2003 and actually had to completely shut down manufacturing for a good year as they expected the cube to sell alot better than it did.

I think they've also left it so long before thinking about increasing production because the GC had a similarly successful launch I believe, followed by total and utter retail apathy for the 12 months after the launch period.

I believe the reason Sony is upping their production is because they're sustaining such heavy losses at the moment, and so the more loss making they do in this financial period, the less they have for the rest of the year which might actually allow their gaming division to show growth/profit on the latter half of the year.

It's been a NeoGAF favourite for ages now.

And they nicked it from 4Chan.
