By default there's no space allocated, so you're fine. Does the BBC article say that you won't be able to use that space after the update? Because I'm sure a 'quick' backup/format would get it all back to normal.

It definitely would. I found it quite funny how the firmware update today asked you if you wanted to update, and then another 'are you sure?'

well no I'm not sure you basts but what choice do I have sigh etc moan.

I saw the other OS removal thing in the info for the update and thought 'jammy gits' but mine is a slimline which doesn't have the capability anyway, does it?

Nope only phats, why would you think jammy gits? we got screwed!1

Out of interest, why have people installed Linux on their PS3 anyway?

Not trolling, I honestly want to know!

Mainly for a cheap Cell development environment, or to use as a simple desktop computer. I doubt the US army will be upgrading to 3.21 because they have a 3000 PS3 cluster crunching numbers for them. Proper Cell server hardware costs $5000 per blade or something, you can get access to the very similar PS3 Cell (but with 7 SPU's instead of 8 on the server hardware), and setup a very cheap high performance computing cluster with them.

                  ^ Backing up blu-ray.

I tried it once. Was a complete pain in the arse.
I'm not as annoyed about losing that option as I am about having to backup and restore my PS3's 320gb drive.

Depends if you're familiar with Linux or not really, I found it the same as any other platform it runs on.

Sorry, I was taking about the whole process of backing up a blu-ray disc on the PS3 specifically, not using linux in general.

Once was enough for me to realize I couldn't be bothered repeating it.

                        its just
                        dd if=/dev/cdrom of=./file.iso

But yeah, its a slow process.

jammy gits was referring to Sony taking away the Linux option, not the people who use Linux on their PS3s.

I tried YDL when I first got a PS3 and I thought it was naff so I didn't bother with it after that (probably because of the 256mb ram) and just filed it under curiosities.

Not sure what sort of developments in the PS3 Linux world have happened in the meantime, though.

Unless some bored army men decide to organise a 16-player lan party for some new PS3 game, knocking that number down to 2984

It is a shame, but I doubt it was used very much. You can get a better PC (baring in mind the GPU is locked anyway) pretty cheaply. As this appears top be the only change, I can only guess that a piracy breakthrough is being blocked. If true, I* am happy it has been done.
With the PS3 being import friendly, there has been no need for chipping and so no "legitimate" pirating development.

I think as soon as the slim was announced without Linux, the writing was on the wall. There is no real hardware restriction with the slim as to why it can't support linux, just a software decision.
Sony obviously feel enough water has flown under the bridge between the slim's launch and now.

They've kind of eased us into it and I've even surprised myself as to how accepting I've been of the situation. I should be annoyed as hell, but deep down I saw it coming a mile off.

This is OT but does 'jammy' mean something other than 'lucky' in parts of the UK then?
