They'll replace it but are out of stock on the Arcade units until Tuesday. I'll be resurrecting old faithful (my old twice dead US unit) from under the living room TV now to tide me over.
We really have had a **** load of failed 360's mate. If it wasn't for the games and Live (well, mostly live these days) then I really would have dropped the 360.

I wonder if the repaired unit being sent to me will fair any better.

TBH I'd rather have the 360 in a PC box with liquid cooling. I couldn't care if it was bigger, just quiet and reliable....

Yep, same here 100%. Great system but it really is a piece of unreliable ****.

I wouldn't hold your breath that any system you get will be any more reliable (I know I won't be). Really doubt I'll be jumping straight in with the Xbox 720 until it's shown that it's not going to be a glorified paperweight in less than 12 months time.

      Just shifted my system around.

*grumble grumble* No HDMI *grumble grumble* Component looks like arse *grumble grumble* power brick not compatible *grumble grumble*...

My machine (a replacement for my launch) just went red rings on me this morning for the second time. Thankfully it's still in warrenty. I wasn't as annoyed as I thought I'd be and I'm actually impressed it survived being on near 24/7 so long when my brother and I were taking it in turns playing Fallout and Fable last year. I've initiated the repair procedure from microsoft but decided to brave the snow and buy a second 360, needing a bigger hard drive anyway.

I've heard it's easier to transfer rights from one machine to another these days. Do I need a transfer kit or is there another way ? (I know I can still use content I paid for on my account when on xbox live but what about other profiles that use the machine?)

I'm now the owner of a new Jasper Pro.

As a followup to my thermal testing of my Xenon (back on page 341), I put the new console through the same testing and results are...well as I suspected.

The reduction to 65nm is great if you want to save a bit of electricity, but at the end of the day, all the poor case/heatsink/fan design issues remain and they pretty much negate any benefit the 65nm GPU brings.
All the conditions for RROD can still be met. This won't stop people thinking the Jasper is the next best thing to sliced bread of course.

Youtube seem to be having a few issues at the moment. It seems they have removed the 'watch in high quality' option for videos posted after Feb 4. My link is to the HQ version, but its choppy as hell (which is probably related to their removal of the option for recent submissions).
The normal version will be chop-free, but look and sound like like a compressed turd. Enjoy!

It pretty much confirms that new 360 revisions are merely cost-cutting exercises, rather than active efforts to fix the fundimental flaws in the console design, and the idea that newer hardware is more reliable is wishful thinking at best.

Can i ask WHY do people keep buying the console? Honestly, no baiting or anything.

Because i have had a US console since launch and it dies twice. First time i got Red Rings, so quickly shut the machine off and left it. It worked. Than the disc drive just refuses to load games now and locks up.

I Refuse to get another one. MS said it will cost me as its a US machine, and with such ****ty unreliable hardware why on earth would i buy another one? My cousin has had his repaired 4 time, 2 of my mates 2 times, my brother once and as i can see from here it happened to spatial 4 times and there are so many stories just like this.

I understand its a great console, and honestly at launch i had some of my most memorable gaming moments on it GRAW will always be a highlight. But its a **** of a design. Yet people keep going back. If you ordered a pizza and you were enjoying it to find out that the last few peices had pubic hairs sprinkled on it you would take it back. And i'm pretty sure you wouldn't order a new one!

Its this reason that last year i got a PS3. Up until my 360's death and MS unwilling to fix a problem because of their ****ty practices i laughed at getting a PS3. Now i'm loving it to death, while my 360 and about 30 odd games sit on my shelf. Even if MS would of replaced it the time it would happen again, I WOULD be demanding my money back. But people just sit there and take it as if its the right thing to do.

So i ask, why keep going back?

The reason people keep coming back is because the 360 offers the best range of software and has the ever-popular live service plus the attendant XBLA.

People who buy a second machine have enough money to spend that they consider electronics disposable. For them, I suspect, ethical considerations (i.e. not giving custom to a bad manufacturer) don't come into it. "It's £100 what the hell, it's the best platform on the market, I spend 20+ hours a week using it..."

LIVE, a service we all gladly pay for.

I am special though, I'm still on my launch machine..........

Maybe they have that much disposable income sure, i know i do. But why go out of your way to buy a product that you know is going to die. Its not an "if" its a "when".

Also best range of software is completely a personal thing. Sure its got awesome games, but the exclusives this gen are few and far between, and LIVE isnt too much better than PSN. I paid for it for 3 years. It doesn't make games any more playable or lag free.

I dont know, i just cant see reasoning for buying a product you know is going to die. Especially if its already happened 3-4 times!

We get 5 years warranty on all electric items in Norway. I needed a second 360 as a "Media Extender" in the lounge, and the 360 arcade was perfect for that, and as a backup machine.

This time (on my 5th) I have to say that I really do feel like saying "Enough." Even though it doesn't cost me a penny to swap out, it just irritates the HELL out of me.

If I had to pay for repair I would have left the console ages ago.

I also notice that my PS3 is getting more and more use, with some games like Mirrors Edge actually favouring the Sony. My friends list is growing too, and Sony are catching up.

So for me personally its all about the games. I have no brand loyality whatsoever, I am a console slag, and I'll drop one in a heartbeat if the games consistantly shine on one platform.

Today that's not the case. I wanted GOW2 and I want KZ2. I loved Drakes, and have enjoyed Fable2. So for me I can't live with knowing I'm missing AAA games.*

*As long as I'm in the 5 year warranty.

If I did have to pay for repair I know in my heart this latest RROD would have been the end of the console for me full stop, and I know that I will make the effort to use the PS3 where possible.

The reliabilty of the 360 is disgusting and shameful of MS.

I've had 5 console fail on me since my Grandstand. All of them have been 360's.

I have both systems but unless a multiplatform game is actually broken on PS3 I'll get the PS3 version as I have more faith that I'll still be able to play it in a few years time. I'd never have bought a 360 if I didn't already have a PS3. That said I'm addicted to Crackdown at the moment. Like Capcom said, both systems have a number of must-have exclusives so if you have the time and you love games then you kinda need both.

It is a personal thing, but I think the general perception is that it does have the best range of quality software and that Live is superior to PSN, whether or not it actually is.

I base my "quality" assessment on EDGE reviews mostly. In general the 360 exclusives have lived up to expectations, whilst PS3 exclusives haven't fared as well (obviously the 360's been around longer, which helps).

Both live and Gs are reasons why 360 has a better attach rate. They want the reliability of Live, coupled with the fact most of their friends will use it for online; they also have the "loyalty points" system thanks to gamerscore.

Thanks for the reply guys, its very interesting to hear some thoughts that are not brainwashed. This question made me dig up an old PM from 05 with Spatial when we ordered our US 360's. LOL. I remember he was pissed because mine got sent out before his, even though his order was much before mine. I still remember the email from the website that stated why. But i dont think i will mention it.

Anyway Capcom Suicide, 5 years is great, just a shame none have lasted that long. It is a great cheap console especially for media use, and your right because MS expect me to pay i just refuse to get another one. If they would of fixed it i probably wouldn't have my PS3. Their lose.

Monomaniacpt, you are right. The general perception is that. However after your friggen console, the one where you play the games on, keeps on dieing surely your general percepetion on the actual console fades no? Or is it OK that it keeps on shiiting itself?

Also your right MS did one of the best things for gaming and that was acheivements. Absolutely awesome. Sony have now copied with trophies, but is Xbox LIVE really more reliable? GRAW had terrible problems, as did Gears Of War1/2. After paying for 3 years and going to PSN, there is really no difference at all. I game on Rock Band 2 and CoD 4/5 and LBP and have never had a problem. Cross game invites/chat? Is it worth the money though?

But you are right, this is the "general" perception not truth.

I agree that you do need both consoles. And i will pick up a 360 when they are dirt cheap, and i mean dirt cheap, just so my 30 odd games dont go to waste. But in the meantime MS have lost me. Am i just dirty? Maybe.

But anyway thanks for the replies because it is interesting to know why people keep gaming on the console. Am i just more uptight? If Sony done the same i would throw the thing at them as well.

Blimey that seems like ages ago now (well, it was I guess).

Picked up Xbox number 5 today. Manufactured 18/10/2008. No guessing how long this one will last.

Best bit was Captain Pimply behind the counter in GAME who warned me that they wouldn't take it back again if it broke and I'd have to deal with MS in future. Unless I paid ?20 for two years extra cover.

I politely declined and told him I'd take my chances and cross that bridge when I come to it.

When what I actually wanted to do was remind him of the fact that under statutory law a ?100+ bit of kit isn't supposed to have a lifespan of just 12 months and if this one breaks I'll be seeking a replacement of refund oFf them. And if I have to taken them to court to get it, I will.

It pisses me off that GAME think they can fob people off like that. MS might be doing a three year warranty but to think there's small army of spotty little spods out there who've been trained think that's how it works, just boils my potatoes.

Gamestation seem to be doing it too, except I wasn't told it by the particular guy who served me when I bought my elite in December.

If it breaks down within 12 months then they'll replace it for me or I won't move from their store until it is.
