Had a nice go of GT4 and Vagrant Story yesterday amoung other things. While I enjoyed fidling with my cars and wondering why i'd bought certain ones and having some races which were o.k, and quite good fun. It became very apparent the A.I needs some major work. The cars around me did not seem to react to anything. I know this has been stated before but playing it again yesterday made me realise this is a big thing they need to focus on.

It's something that annoyed me with both PS2 Gran Turismo games, I'll be gutted if it looks so rediculous again. It also ruined R:Racing Evolution, which imo would have looked near perfect in some parts (particularly suzuka at dusk as the lighting was spot on) were it not for the rediculous amount of texture repetition.

Yeah I can see your point. Its all well and good being clever but you need to know where to draw the line. I wasn't much of a fan of either of the PS2 GT games. I loved the orignal PS games but I thought the PS2 games didn't move the franchise on at all.

OMG OMG OMG?!?! WTF! I just watched the video (http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=19116) and woah! If it turns out like that then colour me VERY VERY happy.

Working spoilers FTW!!!! In car view looks stunning.

The cars are beautifully modelled as usual, and the lighting is nice, but the scenery is very simplistic and as can be seem from the 1080p shots released it's using the now all too common PS3 trick of rendering to 960x1080 then doubling the horizontal. It's disappointing to see but not surprising given the PS3's under performing GPU, and although it would cost Sony a bullet point I'd sooner they just rendered to a nice clean 1280x720 frame personally. It'd be a lot cleaner looking in game.

Certainly not the next step in console graphics to my eyes. Gears was a big leap, this is not.

Now thats what i call graphics! The in-car shots of the driver are cool too, wonder if that will actually feature in the game?

Bloody hell thats looks awesome and wipes Forza II of the face of the planet in terms of gfx . Those graphics are up there with PGR4 imo , but with far more cars onthe track and I take it runnig @ 60 fps .
Now if only PD can get the handling and AI right , somthing which they've never come close to inthe past

Problem is with GT games - you know full well you're gonna have to race around in something like Toyota Aygo before you're allowed the big boys toys!

Lol that was always half the fun of the games to me though!!!

It does seem that a lot of people would prefer it the other way though.

It sort of reminded me of RPGs in that you start off with no powers and slowly build your way up by earning exp points...or cash as it is in this game.

I like the slower cars, you have to drive tightly and make it count.

I am sure everyone is very surprised at KN sniping at the graphics....there's always one as they say.

Why do you use the term sniping ?

He's come in, complimented the car models & lighting but pointed out they're taking technical shortcuts to achieve 1080p and that a 720p target would've produced better results.

You don't want to join the "mob" on here who target individuals and like to label them fanboys before pursuing them through threads with condescending, ill-informed remarks !

Are you saying you believe this IS the next step in console graphics ?

                          @ neko

I agree with the approach they take for GT. Tons of detail in the cars and little in the track. It doesn't stand up to screenshot scrutineers, but in-game it's fine, the whole moving image always looks fantastic.

With Gears they have to put a lot more detail in the level because you spend a lot of time right up against walls not moving when in cover. That and I guess as it's a fantasy-ish setting they need to tell your brain you're on Sera. With GT your brain knows what a racetrack is and fills the gaps.

I think both look great. Gears fits the 'next gen' feature set better, low res models with bumpy bits. GT has a load of models with gentle smooth curves, not really what this gen is all about.

Exactly, I really enjoyed starting off like that to be honest!

As to the graphics in Prologue...

There has been a few comments about certain elements of them being shortcuts. That's what game graphics are in every game, they're shorcuts. Tricks are used to make us believe that we are seeing things on the screen which quite obviously aren't there.

There are no genuine effects in games...every single thing is a shortcut.

If people are concerned with the final graphics of a game they should really only be concerned with the final output on the screen rather than the processes used to achieve them. Maybe a particular game was rendered in 480i and upscaled to 1080p but if that game looks as if it was originally rendered in 1080p...then surely that's a win for everybody?

Does it make any difference that the Star Fox on the SNES used the Super FX chip to fake 3D graphics? Whether they were truly 3D or 2D with an impression of 3D effect is irrelevant to the final game.

Does it matter that Sonic in the original games wasn't actually a moving sprite on the screen but was instead a series of animated frames shown at a fast enough speed to make it look like the character was running?

Does it really matter that Gears of War made the levels look like they were full of high res detail by using Discreet LoD rather than fully rendering the complete environment?

All games could be listed here with a long list of graphical short cuts & tricks that were used as all games use them.

Without the shortcuts, without graphical trickery...we would have no graphics at all.

But all games take shortcuts , there aera's in Gears with very low res textures ,everyone goes on about RE4 graphics , overlooking the low res textures and the fact that like Daytona USA onthe Saturn it couldn't handle a full screen image .
In terms of a racer this is about the best looking there is , not moving the ball forward much , but I never thought Gears Moved the ball forward much if at all . Games like GRAW and Lost Planet made my jaw hit the floor more than Gears

This looks right up there with PGR 4 and when you factor in its handling way more cars on track , and no doubt 60 fps its impressive
