So what fancy stuff do I have to do to get the 360 to play .mp4 files? Because it won't even *see* them on my PC share.

There's a seperate download that it will prompt you to download when it's fed an MPEG4 file. I tried to run a DVD containing Ocean's Eleven. It told me that it couldn't play the file without a further download. It will then prompt you to download it. Watching it now.

I know, but I've yet to get my 360 to even see the .mp4 files physically exist on my hard drive, it's like it doesn't know it's even there. It's wierd.

Pretty impressed with the update. I think the subtle changes to the blade content is good, and I watched a couple of Xvid encoded episodes of Heroes off a CDR and they worked perfectly. I can't understand the criticisms of the Xbox front end being worse than the PS3 front end (in looks terms) - not a fanboy comment, I own both consoles, I just always see forum posts pointing it out - I think the Xbox front end is all warm and cuddly and inviting. Jump In and all that jazz.

After using the Wii a fair bit recently, I would say it has the best front end - very intuitive and straight forward. The Wii menu obviously helped by the remote pointer, but the 360 dash just feels incredibly clunky.

I like the update; much more responsive.

The Xvid functionality, whilst nice, is wasted on me since I opt for the MKV stuff where applicable.

Same thing happened to me with a full series of initial d avi files. For some reason they just didn't show up. Other later series did tho so maybe if its older encoding or something the 360 cant handle them.

I re-encoded a vid from AVI to MP4 last night, and windows MC on my vista box could not detect the new .mp4 file. So I renamed it to .avi and bingo! It worked.

                    *Weird*

I started watching a video and then pulled the USB stick out when I realised it was something I'd already seen. It carried on playing for about five minutes!

Probably known to tech-heads, but very odd to me.

It probably buffers some of it to memory or to the HDD which is faster to read from.

I STILL can't get video's to encode to something that the xbox can read.. I'm checking them out with gspot to see the codec used (generally divx v5 and onwards) and they look like they should be fine. Anyone got any ideas before I start to convert all me films to wmv?

*update* I'll probably do something like this: http://www.jakeludington.com/xbox/20...streaming.html

*udpate no.2* for anyone else having grief with xvids, you can do it easily via WM11 streaming. Microsoft, please fix the 360 extender to play xvids, ta.

Just played the trial of Arkadian Warrios and it doesn't show up on my Gamer Card list.

People having trouble getting the 360 to see .mp4 files, here's a fix that was posted over at Doom9. I have not tried this myself, though I intend to.

^The above works perfectly for me... on my XP machine.

On my Vista x64 machine, mp4 files now appear in the WMP11 library, but still not on the 360. Strange.

btw if anyone is having problems over VGA where some videos give a blank screen (I've had a few), you need to hook up Component and disable 50Hz mode to get them working.
