I couldn't sleep the night before Oblivion was released and was initially blown away until I had seen everything and realised everything started to repeat after that, but those initial 50 hours had me hooked

It depends if you mean length of time or intensity. For length of time it was Mass Effect, looking forward to whatever the KOTOR/Jade Empire team did next as soon as Empire?s credits were rolling. It?s what convinced me to pick up a 360 when it first came out rather than wait for a PS3. As Irony loves me, my 360 died a day after I started playing it. Have my 360 back now, along with a massive smile around my face as I play it.

Intensity I guess that was San Andreas. I would say Halo 2 but that excitement pretty much died that first night playing it. Despite lukewarm feelings to Vice City I had a feeling San Andreas would find the series back on track, and boy did it. I got it a day before release date, a day before I would be on my feet all day selling it to others. I spent all night playing it with only a few hours sleep to prepare me for the busiest day we?ve ever had in the store. (unless you count saying No we don?t have Wii?s, Mario & Sonic, DS?s all day with no till action as busy). There was such an energy of excitement for it with customers (and kids trying to get said customers to purchase the game for them) that it was enough to sustain me through the day, and the following night.

        MGS1.

I had JUST bought a PS1 and played the demo from ISS98 27 million squillion times...I bought the OPM Demo version to play the extra 10 mins or so...

This was before I had the net... So bought every magazine, scanned the images for any clues, learnt the characters names etc..

First game I ever preordered with my own cash too.

The whole game including the amazing ending was just the best thing ever. I think I may have even bought the guide which I never ever do...

Secret of Mana. Remember buying the US import on release and the bastarding cart not working on my converter, having to take it back to the shop (Software Box RIP), and having them find the same problem with theirs - refund city. Problem was enough of it was playable to get me completely infatuated with it, and as such I spent AN ENTIRE YEAR pining for the UK release, driving my friends absolutely crazy raving about it in the meantime.

Same for me. My parents weren't exactly well off & I wasn't expecting one at all, but when I opened it I was absolutely gobsmacked. My addiction to games magazines started then as my brother bought me an issue of C&VG & I 'discovered' Crash & YS. Looking back, I think I got just as much fun buying a new issue of one of those magazines as I did buying a new game.

I still get quite excited nowadays with regards to new consoles/games - I took a day off work to buy my XBox & Gamecube (& then shortly after I bought a US GC from Goblin Games). Then waiting for & playing the US version of Animal Crossing on the Cube was amazing.

I got pretty excited when I bought my new Panasonic HDTV last August followed by a PS3 a few days later, as I'd mostly been a handheld gamer for the last 8 months.

not obvious choices but the most i have been excited in looking forward to a game was either marvel vs capcom 2 or fist of the north star

Hmm Probably when i bought ghouls "n" ghosts for the megadrive.

Was an arcade machine of it near where I lived but it was about 50p a go so I only played once or twice since I was a 10p a game cheapskate. So when I got it for the md I was really impressed! - sucked the life out of it.

Ocarina of Time was really something else. Preordered it about 6 month before release, EB ****ed it up and I didn't get one on release date.
Luckily I got it the following day and nearly exploded with happiness when it was in my hand.

Suffice to say it more than met the hype that surrounded it. Good times...

I seem to be getting more and more hyped as the years go on. COD4 was high up, as was GRAW2... Then we have Mass Effect, Rainbow six.... The list goes on.

For the "Wow" factor on actually playing a game, nothing has come close to when me and Suzi9mm unwrapped the import Megadrive back in the day.

Playing Thunderforce II and Ghouls n Ghosts juts blew us away. The arcade in the home was reality.....

For being overhyped these days I put the blame squarly on NTSC-uk and indeed the hype queen himself, our very own Spatial101.

Life would be boring without a bit of hype wouldn't it? I think I once posted the hype curve....

Oh no! Someone stop him, he's going to start posting graphs again!

It's true that I'm a Hype Queen. I can't even start to try and deny it. Although I have been quite tempered of late by trying to staying away from footage from impending releases. I've found I'm enjoying stuff a lot more when I'm not bombarding myself with footage.

Then again I'm currently pining for Prototype, Iron Man, (and as of this morning) SW: The Force Unleashed. Also starting to get a more than a tad excited about GTA4... oh God! I think I need a cold shower...

Most recently, Ghost Squad. I loved the arcade and couldn't shovel my cash in quick enough. I remember seeing it rumoured on the Wii a year or so back and nearly crying. The Wii version is better than the arcade too. When you really look forward to a game, the whole process of pre-ordering it (and tracking it's numerous, inevitable delays) becomes pretty exciting... Exactly as other people have said.

Resi 3 by a long way. Every snippet of information and screenshot they released was filled with pure awesomeness. Capcom did a great job of marketing that game.

Perfect Dark. Cost me 33quid from Gameplay and arrived the day before release day. Pure gaming heaven for me for years after.

Really excited about getting Smash Bros for the Wii next week, have the day off work to play it!

I'd say Sonic 2, all the features and adverts in Mean Machines (Sonic Twosday and all that) meant i just couldn't wait for it to be released, saved all my pocket money for it...great days

Generally speaking, the excitement I can most remember is for actual console launches. I'm always on tenterhooks waiting for the machines to arrive, and nothing's quite as exciting as that first play on brand new hardware.

I do have one very odd gaming memory though, a long forgotten (cos it wasn't actually all that good) Star Wars game called Supremacy (Rebellion in the US). Why, you ask? Well, at this point, I can only have been about 12/13 years old, and I was just Star Wars mad, and real-time strategy was my favourite genre. So it was, in theory, the perfect game. Then, for whatever reason, it just kept being delayed a week at a time. To the point, that when it finally came out, I simply couldn't wait to get home and play it. Being young, I overlooked all the flaws and proceeded to play it for hours. Looking back now, I know it wasn't anything special, but at the same time, I sorta miss the ease with which early teenage self could get that excited. Takes something really special in the gaming world to fire me up like that nowadays.
