Dunno is people know yet but that Avalanche map has a little something extra to it, sort of like the train on Tyro Station. After a certain period of time there will be an actual avalanche going through the map, anyone caught in it will, obviously, die. In an interesting twist though new areas of the map will "open" up due to the avalanche, very nice idea I thought!

I attended the IGN Black Beta launch in Sydney last night with one Cliff Blezinski in attendance.
What a thoroughly nice down to earth chap. He was chatting to us, chilling out and swearing his head off about a few things... mainly the fact my mate had the brand new Blackberry phone and it wasnt out in the US yet. Cliff then proceeded to rub said phone on his crotch so I guess he really liked it.
They had GOW2 on show there albeit in multiplayer split-screen 2on2 matches but Cliff B did run through a previously unseen portion of the single player campaign where you use this indigineous rock worm as cover whilst proceeding through a mine-type level. It was only a short demo and to be honest the place was that packed you couldnt see much but the game is looking sharp as ever.
As for multiplayer the beta version being shown only had a few levels, Gridlock back from GOW and looking very sharp, covered in moss and really playing every bit as well as it did before. The other levels being used were River and Security... both of which you can see pictures of above.
In split screen the framerate was a bit choppier than expected but still functional. The levels were looking very sharp though and the new controls such as being able to crawl when downed, different finishing moves and of course the meat shield cover system were in full effect.
It was interesting to watch people playing because most played it like GOW but after a few matches you started to see players getting used to the new mechanics. The meat shield is going to really be useful. In past GOW matches its hard enough taking out one opponent, let alone two when you're in a pickle. With the meat shield its entirely possible to sneak up on one player, finish him and grab him... providing you with cover to last long enough to kill his teammate.
Not much else to say except the environments were destructible with pieces of mortar falling off pillars with heavy fire. The lighting seems pretty sweet as well but really it looked like GOW... which is a good thing of course.
Roll on the next 3 weeks.

Do you have to down them first before you use them as a meat shield?
I take its down him, meat shield him, kill his team mate. Then can you toss him on the floor and beat the crap out of him or is it just the quick neck break.
Cant wait for this ,already got a hit list of friends I want to use as a meat shield. Can you talk trash to your victim, that would be the icing on the cake.

Horde sounds like the mode to play:
Horde mode is the star of the Gears of War 2 multiplayer lineup. Oh sure, you've got your classic death matches and capture the flag bullshit (and that co-op mode is still insanely solid); but Horde mode is where it's at. You and four other players pick a Gears character and choose weapons. Then you're dropped on a…

Yeh you down them then as they're crawling away you run up and press Y button instead of B, A, or X which does the different executions. You then pick them back up as a shield Splinter Cell style... I think at that point they've already left the body so to speak and have respawned but whats really cool is the meat shield takes damage and disintegrates so eventually you're just left with bits of a rib-cage!
Its a very useful tactic anyway and one I forsee balancing out 2-on-1 fights online. Provided you can get to one enemy first you stand a chance of getting the shield up to recover your health while you take out the other.
The chainsaw duels appeared to be very fair now as well. If you both attempt a chainsaw at the same time you enter the duelling screen where you tap B to win and saw the opponent. If you're equal you break the clash as well which is pretty sweet.
I didnt get enough time to really delve into the whole balance of multiplayer but what I've seen I've liked a lot. Im dying to play the submission game-type mode which is CTF but the flag is an AI character you have to meat shield and drag back to your base to score. Sounds like top fun.
Lastly there are bots... up to 9. I Had a quick perusal of the menus on offer in the beta version and you could go into a training session and pick AI opponents. Not sure whether this means you could play online with your mates against a team of bots of whether its just offline... but its a nice way to learn levels.

That could change of course.
