Save me reading through the while thread: is the Hori RAP3 any good? We've got a new one at work for ?65 and I've got enough fighters to justify buying a stick now.

How easy is it to mod etc? Are there any better alternatives?

      Cheers.

I just modded mine the other week with all sanwa buttons, took about 15 minutes. They're all quick disconnects, absolute doddle. I think it's a great stick.

Yeah, it's pretty good. Better than a TE at least, do prefer the shape of the Hori VX-SA/V3-SA though. That's a preference thing though.

Is there anywhere that prints vinyl stickers or stick artwork in the UK? I tried to check out Kinko's on TCR the other day and it wasn't there anymore. The WWE SE stick looks a bit rubbish and is in need of some R-Type artwork!

Courtesy of the man above I have a new RAP 3. Had a quick fiddle and I already know I don't like the buttons. Now, I'm not up on this stuff at all so I have a question for the experts here:

The buttons on this are convex, have quite a lot of downward movement and are a bit wobbly. The ones I want are what I remember from the streetfighter machine at Uni. The buttons are concave, have quite a bit less movement and *I think* had a kind of ring round the outside that the button almost sat beneath.

                So, current buttons:

                ______
                /_____\

                What I want:

                /\_____/\
                |_______|

What is it I actually want/need? Can I get them? Where? Are they easily fitted?

                Cheers!

You want Happ buttons then. I think that they would fit in a RAP3 but you'd have to swap the smaller QDs for larger ones as Happ buttons use regular sized QDs.

This Suzo Happ standard arcade button is available in a choice of colours and can be used for arcade machine projects as well as various commercial and academic projects, including museum, exhibition, photo booth and interactive displays.

I think you can get shorter Happ buttons, too, but I might be imagining it. I have a feeling the regular Happs might be too tall to comfortably fit in the HRAP3 housing but I'm not sure. They're about 2.5" tall.

More importantly, they're screw-ins, not snap-ins, so you need a bit of clearance for the nut(which is about 2-3mm wider than the button itself) and the HRAP button layout might not have enough between the buttons.

I found this SRK thread but I got bored because they were arguing about button types:

Still, shows a pic of Happ buttons on a TE stick so maybe there's hope?

TE have a hole in the middle part which would allow the microswitch to potentially sit underneath the plastic part and just above the bottom metal plate.

I would imagine they would have to close the top plate through the plastic bit and then hook the QDs up with the bottom plate removed for the TE at least.

HRAP3 are really quite deep and I'm sure I've seen a RAP3 with Happ buttons before. The QDs sit sideways so there's less clearance required in that regard than a regular Japanese buttons.

I always prefer screw ins and snap ins tend to be single use in terms of resistance because the notches wear away after installing once.

                      But hey.

At the bottom of that thread is a post saying the HRAP3 can take Happ buttons just fine. Had I but scrolled down before posting...

The thing I found interesting when I changed the buttons in my HRAP was that as FSW said, Horis own buttons were very loose in the fitting holes, yet the replacement Sanwas were an absolute perfect fit, no movement at all. It's almost as if Hori make them knowing you're going to rip them apart and upgrade...........

This place must never ever go away. Thanks chaps. I thought there was only sanwa or seimitsu and that I'd imagined those buttons! Best place to buy?

I always buy mine from Gremlin, as Speedy linked above, great service.

I use Gremlin, too. Never had a problem with them and they'd often send random freebies. Once they sent an extra sample button and last time I ordered a bunch of stuff including an orange ball-top and they sent a clear orange one as well
