It's a toss up for me between Arkham Asylum and hotd overkill. Batman has more substance but overkill is just too fun/hilarious. but the Little King's Story is way too good to go without mention... anyway, list for the sake of lists:

      Wii

      House of the Dead Overkill
      Little King's Story
      MadWorld
      Wii Sports Resort
      The Conduit

      DS

      Scribblenauts
      Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars

      PC

      Batman Arkham Asylum

This is by FAR the Game of the Year:

It is a breathtaking beautiful experience with music that makes my heart soar.

Not the best year so far, Uncharted 2 really stands out.

Only Metroid Prime Trilogy and Shadow Complex come to mind. I have played loads of fantastic games this year, but the vast majority were released before 2009.

even though I played some good games all year, it's still easy for me :

              Forza3 and Uncharted 2

"old" games I bought this year which really did surprise me where Pure and Fable2, both absolutely fantastic as well

              XBLA: TrailsHD and SplosionMan

Out interest how can anyone mention any of the Guitar Hero style games? They are all the same thing but with different music.

For me game of the year isn't the freshest idea, or the best storyline. It's the games that provide the most enjoyment. If one of them happens to be a guitar hero game, then so be it.

Perhaps. Fair point but for me they are just all the same. More like DLC.

I mentioned The Beatles Rock Band because I adore the music, it gets my entire family playing and singing (including my 2 and 4 year old children) and for me, that's really important.

Moreover, it's got just as much love poured into it as any other genre game out there, and is going to keep giving me more and more gameplay for as long as I don't get bored, and even then there's DLC.

There is not enough shadow complex being mentioned in this thread!

Reading this thread...it has been a pretty bad year for gaming. Until Batman I don't think we had anything particularly special, even the crazy end to the year doesn't look as crazy as usual.

Good job 2010 is looking back on form.

Hey, how about this long-forgotten game?

Granted, it isn't 'Game of the Year' material but it was bloody good fun - no pun intended!

I don't think it's been a bad year, it's just that we're following two exceptional years. 2006 had less to offer than 2009 has so far.
