^Well if custom firmware is even a reality on the PS3 (and we've seen nothing to suggest that it is), they'll just release a stream of updated custom firmwares. I guess the difference is that online is more important on the PS3.

Maybe they could do some sort of background internet connecting with PS3's. As an example, maybe disabling the option to 'not automatically sign in to PSN', so that as long as the users router is on, the PS3 will automatically try to connect to the internet and when it does, you will be forced to dwnload the latest firmware.

This means the naughty people would have to disable their router every time they use the PS3, which considering a lot of pirate whores always love torrenting stuff on the side 24/7, means this will at the most, be a permanent nuisance to them.

Well, you could just block the PS3s MAC address on the router, but it is a hassle if you then want to go online.

Well, this will be interesting to keep an eye on:

Maybe posting those YouTube clips under the name of your business wasn't such a smart idea.

would it be legal for Sony to force customers to connect online in this way?
as dont some ISP's have a monthly allowance on their BB, if Sony forced customers online, this would surely be unfair as it would mean those customers would quickly exceed their monthly bandwidth allowance.

Maybe if they could use the in-built wireless to scan for the latest firmware, and background download and install anonymously, and the next time they boot the console the special dongle would no longer work, then Sony could catch some people out before word starts spreading.

I would be interested though, to hear if there is any increase in sales of the PS3 after this.

Ars Technica have done a small piece on the court proceedings so far.

I wonder how long before we see unofficial versions of this device come out? That will make any prevention of sale somewhat irrelevent, though Sony obviously had to take action on the manufacturers. The fact that they're suing them for Intellectual Property infringement specifically is telling about what kind of code must be contained on these sticks.

Your posts increasingly make you sound soooo keen to do dodgy things on your PS3

It would be hilarious if the PS3 auto-updated, because you just know some dip**** decided to sue Sony because they could no longer use their dodgy USB stick

TBH i dont really think its anyones business what they do with their console......

I'd love a loader for the ps3; HDloader for the ps2/xbox was the best thing since sliced bread.

no disc swap/faster load times and a nice neat process of cataloging your current games was ace

The thought of nice stable emulation, for some really great games most will never get the chance to play as home releases is a massive plus too. The PC does it, why not the ps3?

Edit - **** it I'm staying out of this one. We all know this stick will be used for little more than nefarious activities. People can try and fool themselves all they like

Your posts are making everyone out to be poirates, though.

You're suggesting that's not the driver behind 99.999999999999% of the sales of this kind of device?

Not really interested in doing 'dodgy things' with the ps3, just want to be able to make a more full use of its tech.
In the past I might have been interested in playing pirated games (which judging by earlier comments which you made in the thread I am presuming that you mean when you say 'dodgy things'), but found this to be quite an unsatisfactory situation. There was no sense of expectancy when playing these games, as I could get them when I wanted them...and found that I formed no attachment to the gaming experience and quickly lost interest. Even though I can now afford to buy most games which I want to play. I enjoy debating with myself and reading others opinions about whether to buy a game or not - thats part of the reason why I enjoy being a member of this forum, as I get to hear peoples opinions. This whole process is absent if I just go out and procure pirate software.

I wasn't having a pop. I just fail to see how any defensive case can be made for this item. Any semi-legitimate use derived from this item will be offset a thousand fold by the damage it does to software developers.
