PlayStation 3 'hacked' by iPhone cracker

Any word on this running PS1 games from other regions? I've got about 20 original discs spread over US and Japanese regions. The only reason I still keep the old grey brick.
(where possible I sold some and rebought them on PSN, but so many titles are unlikely to come out there, like Ghost in the Shell!)
Also, a developer on another forum likened the PS3's backwards compatibility with the PS2 and compatibility with the PSP as being akin to a series of drop-down boxes that Sony can select. He didn't back up this claim, but it seems feasible with how quickly PSP Mini content was made compatible. And I've no reason to disbelieve him.
I wonder it this might allow users to force PS2 BC on their systems.Last edited by Sketcz; 01-09-2010, 12:11.

Apparently, the 'ethical' version is not a mere modified dump of the unit, it is a entirely open source with all copyrighted Sony code removed. This means that the current Sony lawsuit does not apply to this.

Looking forward to a possible change in tone for this thread after this open source news.
I'm interested in the bit about the PSJailbreak locking the console if the usb stick is removed. I wonder if that's to force people to buy it for each console?
I checked eBay for the usb stuff and a Canadian seller has it for about £20 inc. p&p but it's the bare chip, mini usb socket and a capacitor or something! I was initially feeling a bit sadistic but I think I'll wait for a ready-made one. Wouldn't want to go blowing my PS3's usb ports up any time soon!

^It doesn't just mean that though, the source code is entirely publically available for anyone to do what they want with (the Eurogamer article even links to it), and none of it is copyrighted code. It doesn't even seem to be under any particular licence. Sony might be able to take further action to try and prevent the retail of devices using the code, but they can't do anything about the code itself because none of it is infringing upon anything.

I think Number45's referring to the possibility of adding back in the stuff they removed to restore it to its original, 'unethical' status:
the patches injected into the PS3 to re-route Blu-ray traffic to either the internal hard drive or an external device have been removed - this means that the ability to play "backup" games simply isn't possible in the open source version of the hack, although there is nothing to stop the less scrupulous swapping in the original PSJailbreak payload.
