I'm a software engineer so obviously I'm totally against software piracy but I'm not saying you shouldn't hack your PS3. I've hacked my Wii. I've done some things that make it much more convenient for me. However, I also accept that I wasn't supposed to do this, Nintendo say I mustn't do it, I'm probably breaking a law or two by doing it I've taken a massive risk in doing this and if Nintendo send an update down that ruins my console then I've only got myself to blame. It just seems that people don't want to accept this.
I also think Sony were wrong to remove Linux - and this time around the hackers have a good argument for hacking your PS3 because of this. However, what has been their argument for every other device they've hacked?
I understand why they do it but when they do it they DO spoil things for those of us that just want to use the system as it was intended and I don't think they should be allowed to hide behind whatever excuses they make. They've made me have to install more firmware updates than I would otherwise have to and have ruined Modern Warfare for thousands of others. They did that. They allowed the cheaters, who are otherwise not skilled enough, to hack the game and ruin it.
I agree- the Modern Warfare thing is bull****, but they find a way to do stuff like that even when they're not modded most of the time.
I just don't understand why I'm getting attacked for saying I want to use a hack that's already out there to use some eventual media software. I'm not the enemy here? I didn't make it. I don't support it. I'm not going to pirate games.

So the more the hacks are accepted, the more piracy either needs to be fought (constant updates, expense and who knows what else) or the battle thrown, as it seemed to be for many with the PSP (resulting in fewer games). Either way, gamers lose.
Edit: And, while I typed that, FSW wrote a better reply and with another good point on top about Modern Warfare.
Another edit: And just in the interests of disclosure, seeing as dvdx asked, I don't work for Sony or anything related to gaming. But I do work in an industry that is getting pretty hammered by piracy.Last edited by Dogg Thang; 01-02-2011, 19:43.

I realise that's not what you're saying and not condoning it but, nevertheless, the perception is there. It's not a black and white issue unfortunately but the response pretty much has to be because one of the core functions (I only don't use THE core in capitals because I don't know for certain) of these hacks is to enable piracy. And that's certainly the result. So, while it's not black and white, an acceptance of one comes with the perceived acceptance of the other.

I realise what you're saying about piracy but I don't think I'm a valid outlet for these concerns...

Whats wrong with buying something and using it how it was intended and accepting its limitations. Greed overcomes people nowadays, its not good enough it does 100 things it simply must do *insert feature here it was never intended to do*
It's just not good enough!
I want multiregion blu ray, ps2 multi region support, playable psp games on ps3, cross video chat, cross system chat between 360 and ps3, gamecube disc support on both consoles, a flip out screen, 2080P video support, wii emulation, game gear cartridge port, and I'm still going to bitch if it doesn't play xbox games perfectly.

Simple point is... our actions and choices do have an effect outside ourselves, as your car example illustrates very well. No you are not a valid outlet for all complaints about piracy nor would I hold you responsible of course. But you did say what you wanted was your choice to make and you don't think your choices affect anyone else. I simply disagree.

This post reminds me a lot of what Lyris has said to me in the past about the "british" attitude towards things. "It'll do m8 quit your whinging!" If it'll do for you then that's fine, but it doesn't for me so I'd like it improving.
I never said there was anything wrong with keeping your ps3 the way it is. Why are you trying to force me to be okay with that on mine? It's nothing to do with you.
DAMNIT why aren't those features in it alreadythose hackers better get working fast or I will not be best pleased.

There's a distinction between ethical and legal. And to me what I'm wanting to do is perfectly ethical- sony loses no profit, I'm just doing something with my device that I'd like to. And no actually, I bought it primarily as a blu-ray player/ media centre+ the few odd ps3 exclusives I'd like to play (not very many). I already had a 360, Wii and PC for games.

Like I said, I simply disagree with the view that our actions have no effect on others.

You're making this really tough. I just want to move on here. An agree to disagree or something would be lovely but you're looking for more and more specifics to something I've answered.
You're in this thread justifying the hacks, albeit for your own uses. We're probably not the only ones you discuss your hacks with and, while doing so, justify them like you're doing very well here. You have contributed to download figures. Search results. You are one of a very large bunch of people who, by taking part, are condoning the hacks. Maybe not all uses but, as we've been through before in this circular discussion, we know that a huge amount of people are hacking and using hacks for the purposes of piracy.
By hacking your console, you are contributing to the perception that this is all fine and dandy.
And.... I'm out.

Yeah huge amounts of people are hacking their consoles for piracy. And if it was Kotaku posting this- I'd agree with you. And they do do that occasionally. Do you guys write to them when they do, and tell them they're wrong for posting it? Those types of sites are people you should be writing to about this not one guy on the internet who wants to watch better quality films off a hard drive.Last edited by Synthesthesia; 01-02-2011, 20:25.
