Isn't this what was mentioned when the firmware was first released? Only now the name has incorrectly been changed to rootkit due to the negative connotations that carries?

    EDIT:
Yep, as the post before this confirms, that's all it is.

The dev who took claim to our open-source downgrading bounty, call him graf_chokolo, has made mention he?s bringing OtherOS back ? back with the same access rights as GameOS, meaning, ?access to Dispatcher Manager, Update Manager, VFLASH, HDD encryption/decryption, isolated SPUs and RSX of course.?

Full access under Linux may provide a better means of hacking Sony?s beloved PS3 too. Follow the source and read on to see where graf?s at, seems promising?

Looks like they're gonna enable the GPU for other OS and restore it for later firmware versions.

I'm not following, I was under the impression Sony had already locked down the security glitch?

They have, if you use Linux you're stuck using an old version and can't go on PSN

You can still go on PSN, theres a workaround to get on it.

If you don't mind an extremely high chance of getting a ban...

So you can just go around to a friend's house and enter 67.202.81.137 in the DNS field and get their console banned? I don't think thats likely somehow.

Doesn't ban by IP - it'll ban the console's id from PSN.

Are you telling me that Sony are banning people's console from signing into the PSN just for entering a DNS address within a field that they themselves provide right there in the XMB?

Lets just assume that I come around to your house and enter that in. Or perhaps you have another DNS that is one number different and you enter that DNS by mistake.... Are you seriously telling me Sony are willing to enforce such a heavy-handed lockout?

                      What will happen:

You connect with a hacked console. PSN servers will do a challenge using the new encryption which hacked consoles won't be able to properly respond to. It'll ban consoles or PSN IDs based on that.

Who said anything about hacked consoles? I was responding to this.

The workaround is using the DNS that I posted. Nothing more, nothing less. It doesn't require a hacked console and has been a workaround for signing into the psn without having to update since firmware 3.21.

I highly doubt they are suddenly going to ban anyone now for using it.

What is that DNS? Is it a machine somewhere or some kind of Sony thing that someone found out?

As for whether they'd ban based on that, I suppose entering that IP and bypassing the usual authentication could probably be cause for a ban. I imagine they could argue that logging on to PSN using older firmware presents security risks without necessarily implying that everyone who does so is using a hacked console.

Not to mention, you could just as easily go to a friend's house, tell them you've got a magic trick and then jailbreak their console, which would also ban them.

Its a machine somewhere. It has been operational since Linux was removed, so I don't see it suddenly becoming a target for bans. That could change, no doubt. But perhaps Sony can't even identify an individual machine that is hiding behind that server...

Sounds like that DNS works like this:

                              Q. what firmware are you?
                              Sony -------------------------------------------> DNS ---------------------> Your PS3
                              A. The latest version
                              Sony <----------------------------- DNS

So your PS3 isn't even involved in the firmware check

However, I don't see that DNS machine being able to provide the correct response to Sony's new security challenge question.

                                Your PS3's mother's maiden name.
