I don't feel the need to be all righteous about it, but I don't play pirated games. I once borrowed a Chinese multi MD cart off a fat kid at school and I mistakenly bought a bootleg SNK Vs. Capcom Chaos MVS cart, but that's about it I think. I don't even know how to use MAME.

    Kept you waiting, huh?

MAME is pretty much the next best thing, MAME doesn't stand for quick and dirty emulation. Doesn't use GPU acceleration either. A game that runs good in MAME is pretty much identical to the real thing.

I'm sometimes thinking of building a MAME cab, as the switching and moving of carts is just a hindrance. On the other hand I prefer originals, so I'll likely revert back to that anyway. I'm also planning to look into collecting Sega Naomi when I've moved to a new home.

Surely cheaper to buy an original XBox for emulation is the PC route is out? FWIW I've had a PC under my TV for years now, a lovely HTPC I built. Opens up a world of possibilities for home entertainment, you should give it some thought
I have currently got a modded xbox under telly and the ps3 packed away upstairs, felt like some retro gaming but would be great if the ps3 had the same (or better) capabilities than the xbox - plus I imagine there are some emus the ps3 might be capable of running which the xbox would struggle with.

I wonder how long until someone creates a Wii emulator using this and MOVE...

There's been a leak on a massive scale for this it seems. SDK, full hardware tech docs are floating around.

            Someone's going to jail.

It could emulate 4 wiis at once, each running at its native resolution in one screen corner!

Judging by the leak, I'd reckon a lot sooner than six months. These guys work pretty quickly...

I read an interesting article this morning (I'll try and find it) that suggested that the current high price of the kit for the exploit might reflect the fact that they expect it to have a very short lifetime (i.e. That they expect it be be patched out quickly, or that they expect it to be very easy to copy their exploit and distribute it freely).

                  EDIT: Here is is: http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/24/ps...get-your-cons/

I'm really not too fussed about online with ps3 (apart from killzone 2 which was pretty awesome) so if they did bring out emulators etc, i'd likely keep mine offline if they could tell about it, and use it for playing emulators/ homebrew.

Yeah, the SDK leak has come as a shock.

Be interesting to see how quickly something pops up now. The Cell will do all the regular emus with ease. Anyone holding out for a reliable PS2 emulator is kidding themselves, but the usual MAME and NeoGeo stuff may get here just in time for Sony to plug the hole

Think I would do that too, be a shame to lose access to playstation store, but not the end of the world. Will definitely avoid any updates for a while.

Aren't system updates included on retail PS3 titles ?

For those who don't have internet, yes. And its possibly forced too. They could simply put the dongle destroyer on GT5 or so to speak.

They have been in the past, yeah. I'm pretty sure one of the R&C titles included an update.

If Sony hadn't removed a significant feature recently I would have suggested they force all new games to require a secure firmware version, but they're going to find that difficult to enforce now without causing themselves problems elsewhere.

If custom firmware is released as with the psp, wont it be impossible for Sony to force unwanted updates on people?
