So why use a scale as large as out of 10 then?

I like x/5 personally, at least it feels more useful too me!

To the average joe, a 4/5 looks far better than a 7/10...

The thing that annoys me is when people score things out of 5 but still do it in halfs. Look at the film reviews on IGN, they all have scores like 3.5 out of 5. So why not just review them out of 10? I suppose it must be becuase the 5 star thing is standard for films.

Then you have their game scores which are stuff like 8.9, which basicaly means 89% but I guess it isnt cool to score in percentages anymore?

Well I loved Last Remnant even bought a JPN 360 with the faceplate on and they panned that. Blue Dragon same loved it on JPN track with subs it got panned. Lost Odyssey cracking game for me best JRPG this gen got a average review. Same if you go tactic style with Valkyria Chronicles. Good games all round that they dont give justice to for me always looking over their shoulder to what was once their with PS2/PS1 golden JPRGs. Them days are gone review the content infront for it merits stop slagging it off for what it isnt from yesteryear.

Lost Odyessy got some average reviews simpley becuase it wasnt very original, probabaly by the same people who are complaining that the new Final Fantasy isnt enough like the old ones....

I enjoyed Lost Odyessy alot until i got to a bit where i was in a dungeon trying to get enemies to drop me a key for about 12 hours and then died and realised I didnt want to go back 20 hours to the last save point (I'm exaggerating but you get the idea). I then gave up on it.

Well either buy EDGE the Magazine it's self , or just look at the 1st post in the EDGE thread, to see the scores , at leave it that . If one doesn't like the disagreements that will arise over EDGE scores , in subsequent posts in EDGE based score threads

As far as JRPGs go this gen, the only one I've even liked was Lost Odyssey, which I actually adored. It felt like a Final Fantasy!

The rest...not my cup of tea.

I find it hard to accept a 5/10 score for FF13, but I've not read the review text so i can't comment.

Oh and if you start marking games down for lack of originality, this gen would be full of 2/10 games!

In my opinion a game should be reviewed on its own merits, not with one eye looking over your shoulder at a similar game or a previous game in the series.

And in the case of Edge's 5/10 for FF13 I think that's what they've done. A 5 is harsh, but it really is a very flawed game. A fun one that a lot of people will enjoy, but it's a long way off being an 8 or 9 to me.

It was number one this week, but I'd expect a lot of people are going to be dumping it back in trade for God of War this weekend. In Japan most shops won't take it in trade-in anymore cause they can't shift the second hand copies they already have...

I think some need to look at themselves for spouting fanboy etc.. Ive always been very open that branding means nowt. You do get rattled easily on here and attack if you disagree with someones post. Take a chill pill lads their just games pml! Noone ate your family for making their own comments or isnt that allowed Im sure Ive said much worse Eight Rooks anyway in last 15yrs.

FullSpectrumWarrior gets what I mean. 99% of stuff out their is more than fine this gen theirs no justification for saying their dire 50% games with the ones I previously mentioned like FFXIII and DAO. Yea you get a turkey now and again but you spot it months before its released you dont need a review for that one with the likes of Shellshock 2 and Rogue Warrior. Bar has been raised massivly this gen though used to get countless games last gen Id sit and regret dropping notes on last one I had that buyers remorse was Red Faction 2 and it was still solid to play.

Rose tinted is great but should we really be judging next gen stuff on games last gen and onwards over and over to compare and then mark down like FFXIII but then ignore if for key titles (cough cough Halo, GTA). Dig some of these old classics out and try them again you will be suprised how much they date and how clunky they can be.

Times move on games change and alter or just come out with nicer graphics and sound with same gameplay. Long as you enjoy it does it really matter.

Borderlands was a fun and OCD looting game that I really enjoyed and completed. Was it worth an average score? In Edges opinion it is and most people are likely to agree as it had gaping holes that proved to make the game unmemorable but good run whilst it lasted.

I'm sorry, but your assertion that the majority of games out there are fine is ridiculous! There are a shed load of games that are truly awful and people should not spend ?40 of their hard earned money on buying it. You also keep bringing up your personal distaste of GTA4 & Halo 3 and the belief that those series did not do enough to warrant an Edge 10, but somehow Final Fantasy 13 did do enough, so why did it get marked as a 5? The magazine has wrote reviews you can read regarding why they came to that decision, and most people here at NTSC-UK agree with it, even if the review did not match with their own opinion of the game.

As you mentioned, does all this rubbish really matter if you enjoy it? Of course not, we can engage in discussion and conflicting opinions reasonably without resorting to name calling and aspersions if you don't agree with someone.

Well every 16 Bit game would have been a 2/10 then , wouldn't it . Of course a game shouldn't be reviewed on its own Merit , and not compared to other Genre's . I know Gradius V isn't going to last as long as FF 12 , and will be finished in a few hours ,I don't care if a game up review , is yet another FPS or racer , All I care about and want to know Is , the game in questions any good . That seems to a forgotten art, in most games reviews these days .

I did too! I asked for it for Christmas and me and my brother, over the Christmas break, completed it in Co-Op. I really enjoyed the game.

I don't think a score of 5 will deter people from buying FF13. I am on the third disc now, and would rate it something like a 6 to 7. I prefered the characters / music / gameplay in FFX to 13. The best thing about 13 is the battle system.

...but, yeah, each to his or her own, I dont think most sensible people take commercial reviews as the be-all-and-end-all of their buying decisions. The best place to find a good idea of what games are really like is forums like this, from people who actually want to play the games and spend their own money on them.

I dont have a distaste for GTAIV Wools I actually really enjoy it. If you read it in the context of my reply the point is it wasnt marked down for being a rehash of III with more boring areas over say Vice City and SA and terrible dating sims etc... Their just very subjective on what they mark down under the terms seen it all before so will therefore mark that game down for that but not another. GTAIV had some serious flaws like the police where lousy bring the blumming army back!

On contray I bloody loved GTAIV Ive had the keys to the city twice on both systems but it was not ground breaking just a very fun game Id seen and done many times before.

I cant say in general I have a distate for any game as their just games I either enjoy them or I dont. I just dont get that emotional about any hobby. Just go meh its average crap and trade it at worst if I find it average (last one was Darksiders was ok but 1 play thru then trade job).

Maybe in Edges mind I have loads what warrent 50% and less like Mirrors Edge though Again in how they put it

but there is simply not enough depth or reward to the realisation of parkour that lies beyond that sheen.

Which funnily enough Ive now bought on 3 systems (got it free with PC card last year) and still play it every couple of months over and over.

As said previous you take alot of it with a pinch of salt go for your own gut and long as you enjoy it whats it matter. I just been lucky that I rarely ever buy a turd and havent done this gen (bouncer brings back bad memories of hype wagon on last gen) as spot em a mile away dont need a review for a Lair or Haze to see that when the other 99% of games out their are average at worst this gen for me.
