I think (often) when EDGE review, one thing they often forget to assess is whether a game is fun or not. Games can be fun and transcend their oversubscribed genre, lacklustre visuals or well worn mechanics. Borderlands is a great example. For most people if you transcribed the mechanics of Borderlands out on a bit of of paper, it would seem incredibly dull. But mix all the dull bits together and you get a game that most people find incredibly fun. EDGE often get gynaecological in their reviews and fumble around in a game's metaphorical genital area until they find the warts, forgetting all the fun you can still have with a warty.... no hold on, this isn't working..... er....
gamesTM often takes the other approach, sacrificing in-depth critique for 14 paragraphs about pork scratchings and pogo sticks, and one closing paragraph where they just say the game in question is awesome for no apparent reason and give it an 8.
As with all things it's best to buy a game on a personal recommendation, or because someone you trust is raving about it on a First Play thread, play the game in question yourself, and then read the reviews.
