    New Wii Owner Questions (PAL)

Alright, I've had enough of reading the Super Mario Galaxy 2 thread and ordered a UK Wii. The payment hasn't been taken yet I'm still half tempted to cancel it.

I've not owned a Wii for ages so I'm really out of date with what's needed which is why I've opened this thread. I've had a look around on here but I'm just so far behind I felt it best to start a new one. I'm sure some of the questions will have been asked and answered across a few threads in the past

I ordered one of the black consoles as I think they look a touch nicer, it includes Wii Sports Resort and a Motion Plus controller. It only mentions a Motion Plus controller but I imagine that new consoles always include a Nunchuk controller too?

Is the component cable still the best way to go with a Wii? Is one included in the box?

When it comes to saving games, is there onboard memory or do I need a memory card? What's the largest SD card the Wii now accepts?

I'll probably be downloading a few N64 games, what's the difference between these two Classic controllers? Is there a reason to buy one over the other or should I be buying something else instead?

I don't think I'll buy that many disc based games, from what I've seen it looks like it's mainly going to be first party stuff. I'm really out of touch with the Wii games though so I'm looking for some suggestions, these are the games I'm interested in so far:
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Super Mario Galaxy 2
    New Super Mario Brothers
    Super Mario Kart Wii
    Metroid Prime
    Metroid Trilogy

I'm sure there are loads of good ones but these are all I can think of at the moment. Are there any 2D SHMUPS available?

In all honestly, recommend any games and I can have a look into them to see if I like the sound of them. Also, if you have ANY other advice or suggestions concerning Wii stuff just stick it in here as it may be usefull.

Is the component cable still the best way to go with a Wii? Is one included in the box? - YES/NO - 480p setting in dash.

When it comes to saving games, is there onboard memory or do I need a memory card? What's the largest SD card the Wii now accepts? - Onboard or SD, choice is yours. 2GB (it doesn't do SDHC as far as I know).

I'll probably be downloading a few N64 games, what's the difference between these two Classic controllers? Is there a reason to buy one over the other or should I be buying something else instead? - Just use a GC controller.

    Sin and Punishment 2
Ghost Squad (with Nyko Perfect Shot)

Classic Controller Pro doesn't have analogue shoulder buttons. This irritates me.

The Wii does support the SDHC cards now, it was released in an update a while ago.

Much better for N64 games now! Plus if you use it for more than 5 mins your hands don't cramp up.

          CCPro > CC

Thanks everyone, it's been ages since I looked at Nintendo stuff so I'm well out of date with everything!

I've probably got an old SD card somewhere but I'm thinking that due the 512MB of storage built in, I can ignore that and just concentrate on stuff that I need at the moment.

I dont know what to do about the controllers as there seems to be a varying views. Is the lack of analogue shoulder buttons a problem for any Gamecube/N64 games? I seem to remember ending up with a box full of different controllers last time and I'd rather avoid that if possible.

Is it usually cheaper to buy Wii Points directly on the console or online? I'd bought loads of Virtual Console games last time but are they locked to my old console rather than my Club Nintendo ID?

I've also signed into my old Nintendo Life profile and the massive list of Virtual Console games has made me feel decidedly poor. Are there any other sites apart the two that I've mentioned that people recommend?

I mentioned that I was interested in buying Metroid Prime & Metroid Trilogy, is Prime the same game that's included in Trilogy?

                Prime is in Trilogy.

VC games are tied to the console.

You need a GC controller for GC games, CC will NOT work.

Yes a nunchuck will be included.

an sd card isn't an immediate necessity but the onboard memory fills up very quickly if you start delving into some of the great wiiware games.

as others have said I would just go with a cube controller, unless you need a dpad. If you're after a traditional gamepad for retail games though, some only support a classic controller.

There is Shikigami no Shiro III and the Milestone Shooting Collection which includes Chaos Field, Radilgy and Karous.

Ignoring the ones you mentioned (all of which I would consider must buys) I would highly recommend:

                  Twilight Princess
                  WarioWare Smooth Moves
                  MadWorld
                  A Boy and his Blob
                  Punch Out!!
House of the Dead 2 & 3 Returns
                  House of the Dead Overkill
                  No More Heroes
                  No More Heroes 2
                  Little King's Story
Okami (if you didn't play it on the ps2)
                  Tatsunoko vs Capcom
A special mention to the Metroid Prime Trilogy, its up there with the orange box in terms of value for money.

                  and last but not least...

Muramasa The Demon Blade is my favorite Wii game and I'd highly recommend it. You won't find a better looking game on the console.

Thanks, I'd completely forgotten about that and it's something I'd been watching before release.

Did they get a UK release as I can only find US/JP versions? I think I'm going to have to look into the homebrew channel again but I'm not sure if I'll be able to install it on the up to date firmware which this'll have installed.

I've found a few SHMUPS available to download so they'll keep me busy for a while between my sessions on Donpachi & DoDonpachi on the PS3.

In reference to controllers, I'm going to buy a Gamecube controller and possibly a Classic Controller Pro for the old stuff and that should be all I need.

I've seen Samba de Amigo really cheap for just the game but is that all I need or do I also need to remotes?

I'm probably not going to get one yet but what's the largest capacity SD card the Wii accepts? I've had a look on the Nintendo site but I can't find any reference to maximum capacity.

Silly question but how are the included controllers recharged? Does it use a proprietary lead like the 360, a USB cable like the PS3 or do they just use standard rechargeable batteries.

Does the Wii still use that awful friends code system or have they replaced it now?

I've just been looking at those New Play Control rereleases which I'm quite interested in. Are they worth considering or should I just be picking up the originals? Are there any Gamecube games which aren't playable on the Wii?

There are games that aren't playable if you're hooked up to an LCD TV. The Donkey Konga games don't have a sync option like more modern music games so they become unplayable due to lag.

Donkey Konga actualy works fine on my HDTV.

Though maybe I am just lucky, I never have to use the sync option in recent music games either, In fact i find they usualy make things worse.

I would really recomend the Classic Controller Pro btw, its a very nice pad. In fact i would recomend picking up the pack it comes in with Monster hunter Tri, as its a brilliant game and one of the best on the Wii.

The Wiimote uses normal batteries (not recharable ones though), but I think you can get some battery pack/charger type thing for them actualy.

Um. They come with normal throw away batteries.

Get this - the batteries don't discharge themselves much over time (unlike normal rechargeables).
