I'm not doing it this time - not only because of the voice chat thing but more because I'm still fighting with those wankers at Gamestation about replacing my borked console.

Knowing my luck if I got into the beta and was given the update, that'll be the exact time they decide to do what's legally required of them and swap my console for a new one. Which will lock me out of going online until it's rolled out for everyone

Shame as I'd quite like to get my hands on this one.

I prefer the old version. It's only the head that's changed size. Is head size that important to Kinect?

A harsh choice of words but they certainly do not show the same levels of charm, character and delightful imagination as Nintendo's Mii's, that's for sure.

I guess the avatars need to be able to bend in the same places that kinect can detect? If that makes sense? In order to give a better representation of what the player is doing?

That's probably it. There's probably more points of articulation added to avoid them suffering from the rare (but deadly) condition of Kudo-BAM Syndrome.

The other changes are tiny though. Cover the head and you can tell the body has stretched slightly and the hands & feet are smaller, but those changes really are minimal.

I must admit, the avatars have grown on me. I think having the ability to change the clothes adds a lot. Playing 1 vs 100 (sadly now dead) and seeing players dressed as Stormtroopers or the dude from Assassin's Creed in the crowd was good fun.
