Unless the content has been made, and is being held back/ on the disc (which I despise) I don't disagree with it at all. What's wrong with additional content? Shouldn't the people making this content be paid? If it's content that's integral to the main game that's another matter, but side stuff and add ons are fine by me. But I won't pay to make a game easier.

I agree with all your points!
I loved how Half-Life lasted for years with all the mods that came out in PC Gamer (especially They Hunger).
I'm currently playing one of the Fallout New Vegas packs, but love how it's on the disc and is a completely stand-alone adventure.
Day 1 DLC is a different matter. Even if the Bioshock team really did only start on additional content after the main game went gold, they must have had ideas that could have been used in the main game, but held it back to charge us later.
The whole concept of making games easier is daft too.Last edited by QualityChimp; 22-02-2013, 06:56.

Day one DLC is often outsourced to other developers so I doubt it has stopped Irrational doing what they want to do or prevented the best stuff making it onto the disk. When have you ever tried day one DLC (usually from preorder, since I don't know anybody who would actually pay money for it) that was actually worthwhile? I can't think of a single occasion where putting in all those bloody codes you get in the box has given me something good.
Therefore, I don't care.

Bioshock, Colonial Marines, Forza Horizon and Dead Space 3 all lost me when I knew the developers had one eye on making a compromised product and making more money down the line.
I genuinely can't think of this practice going on anywhere else.
Part of me thinks Watchdog should look into this, because it's so biased against the consumer!

When the whole DLC thing started to get going, there was a fear that content would be held back to charge extra for. For us, it's kind of impossible to know when that happens although I do remember seeing tracks in the early trailers for Wipeout Pulse that didn't appear in the retail release. They turned up later as paid DLC. Thing is, that may not have even been a problem and may have been a natural part of development but it's the perception of that that can be damaging - did I pay full price for an unfinished product? Is this less than it would have been if paid DLC had not been part of the finance plan? If this had been a cartridge, would we have got more?
With Bioshock, what we are getting is a premium product at full price from a reputable studio who likely don't have cash flow issues and yet they are already charging extra on top of the price for content that we know we're not getting as part of the full game. We know the product we pay full price for isn't actually a full product. Is this any different to later expansions? Not hugely. It's really a perception line that has been crossed.
And yes, I'd wonder if the financial gain of charging the early adopters several times will soon be cancelled out by the amount of people who see the pattern and wait for GOTY editions to hit bargain bin prices.

I'm not too fussed by this to be honest, they say that the DLC has only recently started to be worked on though it will have been planned for in advance. I know DLC is problematic from many companies but out of them all Irational are one of the devs that I doubt will give us an incomplete game on the disc. In this case I'd wager the expansions are genuine expansions to the full game like Minerva's Den was and the items are neither here nor there. There are far worse DLC examples than this.

Not sure if this has been posted already in one of the previous pages, but here's the start of the game to get you into the mood. It's like dejavu from bioshock all over again with the amazing lighthouse bit.
Obviously spoilers, as it shows you how you actually get into colombia
