Well personally I loved Sonic 4 Episode 1, infact I loved so much that it was my GOTY. The people that moaned about the physics or whatever were just being pedantic. So with that said, im quite interested in this, I just hope the other 3D sonic parts dont derail the rest of the game. IGN's quick preview sounds quite positive.
Oh and i'll just leave this here:
Originally posted by IGN"In [Sonic the Hedgehog 4] Episode I, we didn't actually return to the old physics, and nor did we try to create something totally new," Iizuka says, "What we tried to do was respond to the voices we heard in the fans, and create something based on the feedback we were receiving from fans. On this occasion, with Sonic Generations, we've created a game with a totally different game and with completely different physics."
Different, but for classic 2D Sonic it's exactly the same – or, more accurately, it's exactly the same as you remember it. Sonic's movement seems much less stilted in Generations than it was in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and gaining and maintaining momentum is a much more satisfying affair.

Actually, there was a peer-reviewed study last year that showed that Sonic is actually a big ol' pile of crap. Can't quite find the link but it's over at Science Daily somewhere so have a browse and I'm sure you'll find it - http://www.sciencedaily.com/

Well that looks ridiculously awesome. The fact that they've brought back Sonic's original character design is great too.
However we are all falling into the first stage of the Sonic cycle :|
Sonic 4 Episode 1 was okay, I certainly wouldn't say it was the worst game of last year (maybe the most disappointing for some, but definitely not the worst!). The physics were different, but it was obviously deliberate and they made it work. Certainly one of the best Sonic games of the last few years, although to be fair that's not really saying much.
