Shenmue 2 was a valuable lesson in why a $70million episodic game is a bad idea.
I always got the impression that the Xbox version was just a quick attempt to shift a few more units of Shenmue 2 which had sold really poorly on the DC (it might of actually sold quite a few more on xbox)

It really isn't that much different from Mass Effect or various other trilogy's or Epic's . Shenmue may have gone one better, but the plan is much the same' The only difference is Mass Effect II sold great, where as Shenmue II didn't and that killed the dream

I happen to think if MS and SEGA didn't do a deal, Shenmue II could have sold over 500,000 copies on the DC in USA. It was piss poor deal by Peter, but SEGA were desperate for cash, and most probably through MS could push the series better than SEGA did. Well at least Shenmue got a sequel, which is more than Too Human will manage, another epic killed by sales

I think Xenosaga is a much better example of why you should never assume your epic game series will get made until you've seen the sales of the first part...

I'm sorry but Too Human may have had epic ideas but the actual game was a large bag'o ****e which deserved to die a horrible death at retail, which of course it did.

Indeed, it was total naffness extruded through a goodness filter, the remains were then siphoned out through a **** pipe and frozen into the shape of a load of balls.

Yu Suzuki said the original numbers were exaggerated and Shenmue cost 47 million to make not 70 million; that's for Shenmue 1, 2 and a good chunk of 3 over 6 years (?).

What I want to know is what's the minimum development cost for a game like this now, and what numbers would it need to do?

As long as it’s on one of the main consoles (or Dreamcast 2 ;p) I don’t care. I just like the idea of Shenmue 1+2 being on the Wii because of the controls, and lower visual requirements for a third game.

That is just for the DC versions The Shenmue Project cost over 70 Million has confirmed by the man Himself

And by the likes of kat Sato in DC Mag

Plus SEGA sank another $25 million with Shenmue Online

I wouldn't mind betting there's quite a few that think that about Shenmue , I thought the 1st game was a complete bore , and didn't getting going until just the end, sequel fixed all that thought. That doesn't change the point that if the likes of Epic's like mass Effect II sold like ****, there wouldn't be getting sequel's either

and a good chunk of 3 over 6 years (?).
Little of Shenmue 3 was ever rendered and that was again confirmed by Yu Suzuki . It took SEGA 6 years in total to get as far as Shenmue II

and lower visual requirements for a third game.
Then it really wouldn't be Shenmue the fans and the series deserve

Trust me when I say if Mass Effect 1 or even 2 sold as many as Too Human, EA would be less than forgiving. We all know the biggest reason games get sequels is success and making more cash on it release than you spent making the game. This alone is the reason why Shenmue 3 is still in peoples dreams/nightmares.
Sega will probably let me make Shenmue 3

Mass Effect was a good game unlike Too Human, there have been quite a few examples of games that have performed poorly in retail getting sequels and going on as successful IPs. I do believe critical acclaim does have an effect.

Shenmue whilst it may of been a wonderful experience was actually quite a bad 'game' and as a result didn't get the universal praise from the gaming community

The trouble with Shenmue, is that the Sequel sold far far worse than the original , that is a killer for any 'planned' series, more so one with a HUGE budget. SEGA gave Shenmue another go, like they did for Jet Set Radio like they did for Panzer and Space Channel 5 and they all sold like **** and bang goes the dreams. And when the money men look at the sales of the sequel, what it cost and the amount of people that 'may' buy any planned sequel, it's not hard to see why it's having trouble getting green lit

MS have more cash in the bank than most countries, But I doubt they're about to give sequels to the like of Blue Dragon, Lost odyssey, Kung Fu Chaos, Mech Warrior ECT. I remember how Sudeki was part of a panned trilogy, and looked what happen there, even with MS billions . Poor sales= no green light

In the story posted he says 47 million.

I think with all these contradictions it?s clear where the blame lays. XD

As for little of Shenmue 3 being made. From what I remember, when they realised the DC was about to bite the dust, they added the start of Shenmue 3 to Shenmue 2; the part where the boat arrives at the village is supposed to be the start of Shenmue 3 - Shenmue 2 was supposed to end after the roof top battle. We?ve already seen in the video they had characters designed for later in the game so it?s safe to assume there was a fair amount of work done.

From the second interview, they won?t be working fresh with new technology. Wii, PS3, 360, they?ve all been around long enough so they?ll know how to squeeze extra performance already.

I think Sega just need reassurances that a) he won?t piss the budget up the wall and decide to move development to PS4, b) he can deliver the game with a much smaller team, and c) it?ll make money. He won?t do a) Don?t know about b), c), Perfect way to find out though is to let him handle a Shenmue port. ;p

DLC for me on XBLA and PSN would be brilliant. I'm sure if they kept the graphics at the same level as the Dreamcast it would not cost too much, I guess. An HD version would be amazing if it could happen. I'm sure Sega could make money off of it if they market it right. Interview below is interesting. He seems embarressed about the amount of Shenmue questions to me at first. He is prob sick of hearing about it.

Yu Suzuki Japanese interview here from 2011 GDC

                            Taken from Shenmue dojo

I like a lot of Yu Suzuki's games mainly

F355, OutRun, Virtua Fighter and Shenmue. There is evidence too that in other hands his games can evolve and still be great e.g. The Virtua Fighter series. Which is still big in Japanese arcades.

Hmm I dunno maybe SEGA fans.. Shenmue Fans... Yu Suzuki Fans?

You might not care, but Shenmue II is my all time fav game.
Has been ever since I first completed it 10 years ago.

If your not a fan of the series your opinion don't count here.

I replayed through both games last summer in Japanese as a bit of practice and still found them brilliant.
