The Next Generation - Do you want it?

E3's around the corner and Microsoft are rumoured to have a new console to show. Playstation 4 rumours are showing up as well... Are you interested?

This time last week, I probably was, but then I played L.A. Noire. Obviously it's a bit of a cheat, but if the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are capable of creating people that look this real already, what's the point of a new generation? I can't think of many times this gen where I've looked at a game and thought "well, that could look better," and after L.A. Noire I just don't see where we can go next.

Surely everything's good enough, at this point? What can another generation bring us? A slightly more detailed texture on a wall?

I'm not sure we need it. Do you want it?

No. Quite happy with my massive backlog and the next year or so of releases.

Couple of years maybe. When there's a next gen, I'd like it to be for good reasons. Not just simply because they can, or feel as if they should.

Ditto. Surely these have a good couple of years in them at least.

I think quite a lot could be done with new hardware, and im quite excited about the prospect. Think next year for a new xbox and 2013 for ps4 would be good

You only have to look at a game like Dirt 3 to see that graphics are still improving on this generation of consoles, so theres no need yet.

Plus PS Move and Kinect havent been out very long, so its doubtful sony and microsoft will want to give up on these consoles quite yet.

As for L.A. Noire though, that game is only impressive becuase of the motion capture technology, not the consoles its on, its actual graphics arent that great and the rest of the in game animations look 5 years old, Plus all the women in it look like they were played by the same man in drag (complete with five-o-clock shadow). It probabaly wouldnt have looked much worse if it had been made for the PS2.

There are alot more impressive recent games out there than that one. And they prove theres life in this generation yet.

Still too early for the next generation. Plenty of life left in the present systems. Stuff like Crysis and the Tri-Ace demo proves that.
Besides the publishers would probably like a few more years with hardware they understand and with mature development tools. That would give them a chance at turning a profit more often.
Personally I feel this generation has been overloaded with generic FPS and we could do with a bit more diversity.

                  Far too early.

Still don't want a new gen, if the release all at once I can see at least one of the big 3 suffering. 360/PS3 sales are rising, game quality is improving and schedules are full. A lot to sacrifice for some higher res textures

Perhaps the next gen is (perhaps) coming earlier than necessary due to the convergence of AV technologies (eg. internet enabled tv's etc etc),

Both MS & Sony want their console to be the hub, they need to have a dominate prescence, so releasing a console before your competitor gives you an advantage.

If Sony and Microsoft unveil new consoles any time soon they're going to look like such hypocrites after all that 'ten year lifecycle' talk. I'd like to see them stick to that plan.

I don't want next gen for at least 1 more year. Still, if the Wii2 comes with the goods MS and Sony's hand might be forced!?

I'll ignore any new console release until my back catalogue is mopped up anyway.

I'd be hoping for far more interactive detailed worlds, superior physics and AI as well as improvements to graphics, framerates and load times. Also maybe they could take motion controllers and rumble technology to the next level and take greater advantage of the latest TV's (higher resolutions and 3d).

I can wait a couple of years though as I've got tons to play already on current systems with plenty more on the horizon and won't be getting a 3d tv anytime soon.
