Wasn't the SNES release held *back* until they were happy with Mario though? The R&D costs are a lot higher now so that's not a luxury they have these days.

They just aren't up to the quality of e.g. Super Mario World and Mario 64, both of which are considered to be amazing games even now. Games obviously take longer to make these days so yeah, it must be difficult to get one ready in time for console launch. The console makers therefore have two options - ship with no AAA or delay release until a AAA is ready. BTW, I'm not a fan of the term AAA but I use it here to get my point across.
Yes but that was an exception, even NCl couldn't get Mario Sunsine ready for the Cube's launch , Galaxy wasn't ready either for the Wii's and lets remember the N64 was launch was delayed for ages due to software and hardware issues and that's on hardware nothing like the Ps3 or 360 when it must takes much longer to model a world or character

As long as the new hardware as a decent game that is doing something that the previous gen couldn't offer , I'm happy

The main issue is the lack of system sellers during the launch period though, right? These may or may not be regarded as 'triple A' titles later down the line, but the key thing is that they have to be games that make people want to invest in an expensive new format. With the Dreamcast, it was Virtua Fighter 3tb, with the GameCube it was Lugi's Mansion, with the XBox it was Halo, etc. Whether or not these titles are regarded as 'triple A' titles later down the line is subject to debate, but it's besides the point - they are games that make people want to invest in a new format. Such titles do appear to be becoming rarer.

I would agree , but lets be fair you highlighted just 1 game for both the Cube and DC worth getting - I could have done just the same for the PSP, X360, PS3 so I really don't know how you can say they are becoming rarer .

With the DC I was more happy with the fact I was getting Model 3 quality visuals in my home, and that was more that enough for me to know I've invested in a great machine and it was a genuine step up above the older consoles. PGR 3 may not have been as good as PGR2 in overall terms, but in visuals it was a massive jump and seeing it running in HD one of those 'WOW' or 'FU*K Me Pink' moments you get from a brand new console , showing off it's new GFX

Good point Jake. RFOM and Motorstorm (along with the promise of MGS4) *made* me get a PS3. Halo CE made me get an XBox.
