for me it was extra content, doing vigilante in the apache was rewarding and calming at the same time

learning to fly the harrier was a task and that was rewarding when you could fly it well and sometimes i had my airfield out near vegas and the hanger was full of stuff just to play around with and with and kinda use as a simple man's flight sim

even stupid stuff like using the thrusters on the harrier at the highest height in the game and base jumping out of the aircraft, small pleasures

I've never finished a gta but vice city was my favourite. I think because of the setting and the music mainly.

Story. It didn't seem to want to go anywhere. And it had loads of pointless extra systems tacked on like having to exercise and eat and so on.

More like childish and tasteless. GTA has style and humour, SR tries to ape it but fails.

I agree about SA lacking focus. Also, CJ was a really weak character compared to Tommy Vercetti. You don't have to exercise in SA btw (unless you want to be a beefcake), and you don't actually have to eat that often so those didn't bother me at all.

Oh, and the new logo resembles a dollar bill.

Me neither, its just too easy to get lost. The missions all seem to lack forcus eventually. I think the Ballard of Gay Tony was one of the better GTA games but then obviously too short. They need to sort out the gameplay mechanics in order to get me excited again, like when you walk, run, jump . . . . Hell, even cover shoot stuff needs work. The GTA games have always looked nice and had what appear to be amazingly detailed maps/levels, but when you get stuck in I've always felt it never quite reaches the expectation levels. Having said this I've not given RDR a proper go although its not really a proper GTA game.

Yeah, I think the story suffered from the game just trying to be too long - meaning more and more mission bosses. Of course, that's the main purpose of a GTA story: to deliver the missions. All other GTA games were much tighter in that regard. But, ultimately, for me story in GTA is effectively just a series of cutscenes that serve to give you the aim of your missions, the mission intros. So, while it's great if that story can give a reason to care (Lost & the Damned failed miserably there and, yeah, SA wasn't so great with it), it's not the meat. Ideally, of course, a good GTA would marry a great story and fun, open-world gameplay but, if it comes down to it, it will be the latter that carries more weight for me.

GTA4 failed for me because the emphasis was on too much reality. The walking then running, having to bank in order to turn, the slower pace, boring missions, lack of excitement killed it.
If I wanted to see a living breathing real city then all I have to do is step outside my house.
what I loved about the previous GTAs was that its was all so over the top. It felt like a real city but the rules of gravity & physics had been bent, plus the creativeness of the missions which made it all the more exciting & FUN.

Vice City was also my fave just because of the whole atmosphere surrounding you while you played. Would love a sequel to it.

Echo the same sentiments here. Even though it was a technical marvel at the time I really didn like GTA4... I don't know precisely why but it literally bored me so much that I couldn't go back to it and switched it off. The multiplayer was also a broken mess of an addition that I was originally looking forward to.

But... RDR I utterly adored. Not perfect by any means but such a better game experience. There is hope (for me at least).

The first teenager to ask me when GTA V is released is getting punched square in the face! (or more likely corrected condescendingly for mistaking a numeral for a letter). That's actually for the irk thread, kids asking for GTA 4 but pronouncing it I V, i always say yea but they've got to be XVIII to buy it.

Anyway, loved vice city, the atmosphere and the music, connected with tommy vercetti more than CJ (whose name I only remember as it's been mentioned here), just blazing down the main road towards a setting sun on a motorbike with owner of a lonely heart on the radio was something i'd never tire of, but also enjoyed the scope of SA, and as mentioned, filling my hangar with lots of vehicles to then spend ages doing nothing more than dossing about in them, actually thinking about it, the radio stations are an integral part of a GTA for me, I did like some of the music in SA but none of the humour was memorable like with 3 or VC, and IV offered nothing in the way of comedy value for me, I think they forgot what made the originals (ps2 onwards) so much fun! lets hope they get back on track with this one, and bring back my private jet!

The more people talk about it, the more I was crazy stuff again like harrier jets, jetpacks and the like. Taking a plane as high as possible then base jumping out and pulling your chute was made of pure win.

I kinda had a feeling it was going to be set in the past like 30's or something but would you even get cars littering every street, never mind radio stations in cars with humour, etc. Maybe it will end up being current day afterall.

Maybe that's why they spell it in the logo also?

With that in mind I seriously reckon they'll still call it V-5!

Never really understood the hate for GTA IV, personally I loved every minute of it, the density and atmosphere of Liberty City was amazing, the plot was far better than previous games, and the characters were excellent, Brucie being the highlight.

Also loved the inclusion of the "random characters" and in game internet, the latter being especially good, I must of lost hours to just that alone.

One thing I really want to see in GTA5 though is an iFruit as your phone, it's mentioned a few times on the radio and internet in GTA4 but would awesome if it was in 5 complete with pisstake apps of things like Angry Birds.

Kotaku are rumouring that's based in SA's Los Santo's... how dull. LA has to be of of the most boring muses for gaming.
