IMO the length of them suit the plot and pacing better, there's some funny characters and situations and generally they're "tighter" somehow (not to mention chaotic and fun).
With the benefit of revisiting, after a long break, I feel like this generation's Liberty City is quite full and detailed - in a way that I'm not sure I appreciated when I played the main GTA IV storyline. It doesn't feel as vast as (for example) the continent of Just Cause 2, but what there is is better filled out - I keep finding these courtyards and service entrances and shortcuts, and it gives the impression you could spend hundreds of hours exploring Liberty City and still keep making new discoveries.
