I could never list my 10's objectively. If you go that route your reducing games to nothing more than a series of boxes to tick to satisfy whatever magical criteria you think warrants a 10. The day I start doing that is the day I stop enjoying gaming.

Am I an Area 88 fanboy? Not at all.

Even although I'm not blind to it's faults, I wouldn't dream of excluding it from my list as there is no better game in that genre for me.

More like something with obvious design flaws, poor control issue or things that directly affect the gameplay. Again something like Tokyo Highway Battle is one to think about. I love the game dearly but it wouldn't score above an 8. It has so many issues with poor AI, slidey car control, no licenced cars, slowdown, popup, lots of grey tracks etc etc. Yet it still is a very enjoyable experience if you can get into it.

I made up my list based on games that I feel should be awarded a ten according to the criteria I find most important in a game. I think that many people would have similar criteria to me. A game needs to be judged on playability, control, art/graphics, audio then presentation in that order. While I'm interested in the technical side of things I wouldn't play a game just because it's a technical showcase.

Bugger it, I?m going with that line of thought to create this list!
1. Super Mario 64
2. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4. Half-Life 2
5. Resident Evil 2
6. Resident Evil 4
7. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
8. Tekken 3
9. Doom II: Hell on Earth
10. Gran Turismo

That is the kind of thought process I was looking for. Some of the games may have been bettered now in the likes of GT like you said, but GT1 is worth a 10 whereas 4 is worth a 9 imo.
Thinking about it, it can be hard to put up a criteria for something like this and we do have the benefit of hindsight which is perhaps a little unfair on more current games.
Originally posted by Wools View PostBecause we have the benefit of hindsight, it’s trickier to score a game a personal 10 as sequels may have perfected the formula but they were nowhere near as ground breaking as the original. Case in point is Gran Turismo. I consider GT4 to be a better game, but the original GT came out of nowhere and forever changed the racing genre. I would be more inclined to award the original 10 but the fourth game in the series is better to play today.

---------------------
1. My favourite childhood memory - summer 1995, saving all my pocket money and buying this for over 50 quid. It looked amazing, it sounded amazing and it played amazing. Even playing it today, it hasn't aged one bit. Kudos to Miyamoto for going against Nintendo's wishes to copy Donkey Kong Country's rendered look!
2. I remember my brother queuing up for 6 hours to get this for me on release. I still remember him saying "this better not be a green mario!"opening title to the end credits; Magic
3. I remember seeing this running in computer exchange 15 years ago...jaw on floor. It really was stunning! I had to wait a whole year to get it on PAL release, but it was worth all the wait! Back then I would rinse a game from start to finish, until there was nothing left from it. Being a broke kid really made you appreciate the games you had(I've recently gone back to doing this, now that I am a broke 'adult').
4. After the stale taste Mario sunshine left in my mouth....WOW! For many years I didn't think Nintendo could possibly match Mario 64's brilliance. I always thought: "where do they go from here?" Well.....This is where! I wanted to put this above Mario 64, but nostalgia has stopped me from doing so
5. I used to drool over this when I was younger. All my friends had a SNES with Mario World, I still had a Gameboyfinally getting this along with Super Mario Kart was a dream come true at the time. I would play this with my older sister for hours! We both look back at this with great memories. We lived sheltered childhoods and Nintendo got us through those years
6. Same as number 5.
7. This was my first Zelda experience and RPG, and I hated it! I didn't get it at all!....but then...2 hours became 4 hours became 8 hours became 16 hours....
8. I still remember my brother getting this, thinking it was an on-rails shooterI am so glad he made this mistake, as it had such a great story! I never wanted those 4 discs to end. I absolutely loved this game! And it only cost 25 quid at the time
9. When my brother and I got a NTSC-US Dreamcast, the system came with a demo disc which had a Sonic Adventure Demo and a Powerstone Demo. Between the 2 of us, we played the londo stage demo at least 1000 times! This is still my favourite Dreamcast game. I cannot believe Capcom have not released it on Live and PSN yet!hock:
10. I started this thinking it will be so bad its good. The graphics were pretty bad, but that didn't stop me. I thought the main character was a complete asshole at the start, but that only made the game more funny. There's something really scary about this game (I'm not talking about the horror aspect), I'm talking about how it sucks you into its world and doesn't let go off you! Fantastic plot, music, writing and one of my favourite game endings ever!
