Recommend me my first Pokemon game

I fancy getting into it, but there's so many to choose from. I will be looking for one to play on my 3ds.

Please use this thread to discuss which are your favourites too.

Pokemon Black/White - most recent releases and using a new graphical engine made for the DS specifically. You will have some issues with the look of the game playing it on the 3DS, DS games not looking their best on there.

Or just give it a year and wait for Pokemon [insert colour] to be released specifically for the 3DS.

Oooo as someone who played the games when they were first released I would suggest grabbing a GBA and going back to the roots (well, nice and playable versions anyway)- Fire Red or Leaf Green. I do really love SoulSilver/HGold too though, again possibly because of the nostalgia but also because they are excellent games and incorporate the whole of the first games cities into them as well.

That said my girlfriends first Pokemon game was Black and she loved it, so really I doubt it matters which game you come in at as they are all decent and you'll probably end up wanting to play the others anyway...

Considering that every new game is basically an update Ivwould say that you should get Pokemon black/white.

It's the best one, has the most Pokemon in it ect.

I may just do that. Wow still pricey (xmas shopping has left me boney). Thought it would have had a price drop.

Just looking on ebay, those Leaf carts are very "my precious" looking. They've given me that "must collect" feeling. Must.... play... game.... first.

I thought Black/White had fewer Pokemon than previous iterations, and that was part of its attraction? Pearl/Diamond numbers were ridiculous.

Another recommendation here for Pokemon Black/White. Pretty sure I saw it recently for around ?20-25 which aint bad tbh.

Well Red and Blue are my favourite, i started off on blue and have been getting them all since, the original was a classic with a great story and playing through it multiple times just to get those elusive Pokemon and as the saying said ' Gotta Catch Em All".

Until you finish the main story, Black and White only feature the 160 or so new Pok?mon, but after that loads of the old ones become available.

Pearl/Diamond/Platinum feel very sluggish nowadays, but you really can't go wrong with HeartGold/SoulSilver or Black/White.

I'd suggest becoming a child, getting a circle of friends and playing Red/Blue on a DMG-01 in 1998. That is the correct way to play Pok?mon.

I used to play it in the cloakroom at school with this kid from year 6 (as I was sooo badass). My best mate and I used to pull all nighters too on sleepovers - we used to start a new game and see how far we could get before falling asleep!

Lol, I borrowed my mate's copy of Gold so I could beat Morty for him - went to his house the next day with all 16 badges.

                        Oops.

I can't believe I used to put up with that screen. I found the light/magnifier I used to bolt onto it the other day, seems so laughable now.

Blue was great, I imported that when I was 16 in 1998. Got so hooked on it that I nearly failed Chemistry because I'd stay at home in the mornings to watch the series on Sky 1. Can't say I've tried anything after Crystal, though. Is there anything to recommend a modern release over the Red/Blue versions or are there just more monsters?

                            I've hear/read that Black/White are awesome but I haven't owned a DS since their release so I can't comment.

Ruby/Sapphire are worth a look though, you might also like to try Fire Red/Leaf Green if only to see how Ninty handled the remake.

Honestly, the first two generations of the Pok?mon titles are my fondest gaming memories.

I totally missed out on them through my own snobbery. "Kids game", I thought. A 20 year old Ridge Racer at the time.

Now, in my old age, I feel I need to stop and smell the Pokemon roses, for gaming history sake and for my now family man lifestyle.
