    Gaming + Your Music Taste...

Just a weird thought but late 2010 one of my housemates bought an Xbox and played 2 games constantly (a cops and robbers Need for Speed and whichever Fifa was new then) I never played them beyond a couple of drunken "let me have a go" moments but from sitting around on my laptop while he played in the living room I started to really adore the soundtracks, so much so that I actually ended up googling the lyrics to and downloading about 15-20 songs from across the 2 games. I forget which game Two Door Cinema Club were in but they're one of my fave bands now and the Chiddy Bang/Plan B songs in Need for Speed are my go to Friday night drive home tracks now.

I think others have done this too because I was in a trendy bar in Sheffield called Bungalows and Bears about that time and they were playing "Yeasayer" and "Charlotte Gainsbourg" from Fifa within minutes of each other...

I was just wondering if any of you guys actually use certain games/franchises/publishers as your source of music discovery and if so who are the best?

One of the FIFA games from around the turn of the century had Fools Gold by The Stone Roses as one of the menu songs, got me into them big time.

Oh and Singstar got me interested in a few bands such as The Cure and Depeche Mode. I remember acing This Charming Man by The Smiths at a drunken party but I was already a huge fan.

When Tony Hawk 1 came out I was getting deep into skater punk and that soundtrack had a big influence on me. Cyco Vision is still one of my favourite songs.

At the time I enjoyed a lot of the Burnout 3 soundtrack but a year later I realised that it was all terrible pop rock garbage.

The bemani titles have influenced my tastes quite a bit. As well as Final Fantasy and the first Need for Speed Underground. THPS2 introduced me to RATM of which have become my favourite band. All the THPS games have some nice music in them really.

            Agreed on the THPS games.

TBH I can't think of many other games I play(ed) that use "real" songs, aside from some racers with mainly crap soundtracks (I seem to remember the best song on the Burnout Paradise soundtrack is "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne )....

That's the edited version though. If you want a real treat, try the Japanese version.

Through Guitar Hero I discovered the majesty of The Best and the Harlot by Avenged Sevenfold. That is an absolute stormer of a tune and previous to that I had dismissed all of Avenged Sevenfold's music.

YYZ by Rush is another one from Guitar Hero which I now love. I did listen to some Rush before but playing that tune in the game made it really click with me. It was also the first tune I maanged on the highest difficulty setting.

I always loved the song 'Slow Ride' from Dazed and Confused soundtrack, but playing it on Guitar Hero make me really love the track.

I adored the Ladytron song 'Ghost' in Little Big Planet 2 and even made a level with speakers blaring it out (unpublished), so I bought their 'best of' album which turned out to be she-yite apart from that one song.

The Wipeout soundtrack was big for me. Not only was this mysterious Cold Storage awesome, but Leftfield and Orbital were awesome. Got me into electronic music in a big way and eventually on to producing as a hobby.

Man yeah actually Wipeout, had forgotten about that. I know most people seem to hate the N64 game but it had a great soundtrack!

A lot of soundtracks were really big for me and I have a massive amount of VGM on CD but in terms of discovering bands from games... well I discovered Killswitch Engage from one of the Burnouts (totally passed me by before that). And discovered Kavinsky from GTAIV. And actually MSX fm on GTA3 was a big one too. Just as that came out, I ended up at a drum n bass night purely by chance that turned out to be one of the most energy-filled and fun nights of my life. And then I got GTA3 which had MSX which led me to Moving Shadow and many of their artists. As it happened, I knew a bunch of them anyway but I wouldn't have put them together or discovered more of them without GTA3.

Still nothing like speeding around Liberty City at night to Omni Trio's First Contact.

Suicidal Tendancies! Was my first experience of them too. I remember being in a second hand music store a while after that and hearing that song playing in the shop, few quid later I had the album
