Personally, I really like Soul Calibur II. The story mode's new challenges are forcing me out of my complacent ways on the first one, and while I can certainly understand why some people took objection to some aspects they aren't ones I'd ever appreciated then anyway. Besides, making Astaroth dress up as a purple rabbit has got to be worth something.
My nomination, though its an older game I only actually came to this year, is Chronicles Of Pern: Dragon Riders on the Dreamcast. My wife is a big McCaffrey fan so we had to try this out, but the control scheme is utterly horrible to the point of making it impractical to do the simplest things, the Dragons look all wrong, and its interface for activating things requires you to stand in exactly the right invsible spot to do anything. Meanwhile, your oh so bloody "helpful" companions repeat their requests every 20 seconds until you fulfil them, in case you've forgotten. I came within inches of snapping the disc in two in the first half an hour.

Without a doubt, Enter the matrix.
Im a massive fan of all the films and in early videos the combat of the game looked stunning and very, very, quick. I played the game ignoring the EDGE review and was so disapointed. Although I did have some fun, there wasent enough to make me come back.
The control of your character was hideous and firing the guns was difficult using the Xbox controler. So the gunplay was awful, the driving section was awful, and the ending was atrocious.
The only saving grace was the slo-mo combat.

The only game I would dare label as **** this year would be Devil May Cry 2 - had it been released on it's own terms & not a sequel, it may very well have garnered a bit more praise. As a follow up to the original game though it was a severe disappointment.
I said it back in February & I'll say it now - tanks followed by helicopter = not fun.

Clearly you people do not play enough really BAD games.
I mean, c'mon. DMC2 may be dissapointing, but its no turkey. The controls and graphics are solid, but the game lacks any real spark. Thats not bad as such, its just a cookie-cutter game done for the bucks.
Now, Darkened Skye on GC. Now thats a BAD game. Sloppy controlls (you have to aim at fast-moving targets FPS-style with the C-stickft: ), frequent deaths (there are loads of jumping sections, and missing a jump means you die - usually), crap graphics and some unbelievebly rubbish level design.
Oh yea, and did I mention that sometimes when you try a running-jump, your character may just refuse to jump at all ?
This games only saving grace is its amusing script and decent voice-acting, but the actual game is way too annoying to make them worthwhile.
Thats my vote for Turkey of the year. (actually it was released on PC last year but the GC version was released in 2003 - does that still count?)
(BTW I actually liked Primal. The occasional bugs were a bit annoying but I thought it was a pleasant gaming experience overall).

I can't believe I haven't said this. But SOCOM in offline (don't know about online).
Great for the second and third mission, but in the first mission you can't see because of the pitch black (which I always hate) and by the fourth mission the novelty wears away and you begin to see all the flaws. But of the games I've played MP comes second. I don't tend to play crap games.

Am I the only person on the planet that thought that MIDNIGHT CLUB 2 was the most over rated piece of CRAP to be released this year. What I mean is that I had very high hopes for the game but when I got it (then returned it, thanx EB) the visuals were horrendous, the sound was second rate and that story line was sooooooo fast & furious. Shutokou Battle 01 is a much more well presented game. But it's all just my opinion.
Remember I played the PAL PS2 version..
