Elite: Dangerous (Elite Kickstarter) David Braben/Frontier

    David Braben/Frontier Developments.

Elite: Dangerous is the game I have wanted Frontier to make for a very long time. The next game in the Elite series - an amazing space epic with stunning visuals, incredible gameplay and breath-taking scope, but this time you can play with your friends too. I want a game that feels more like the original ?Elite? to fly, and with more rapid travel (to allow for the multi-player nature of the game) ? so you travel quickly using local ?hyperspace? travel rather than by fast-forwarding time ? but with the rich galaxy of Frontier ? and more, so much more.
Is this going to go through the roof?
One of the creators of Elite is turning to Kickstarter to raise cash to produce an updated version of the classic video game.

    Yes.

They are gonna be going head to head with Space Citizen, which I've already backed. The thought of another Braben-made Elite is all very romantic but I suspect the ambition outweighs the skill to make it. We'll see though. Should get good backing in the UK.

EDIT: Backed anyway. How could I not!?

I'd be more than happy with a tarted up version of the 3rd one. Best original Elite was the 32bit acorn one.

I really don't think DB is going to struggle to get the funding on this, its only a few hours old and its already up over ?100,000. March 2014 release date which is doable if most of the game is procedurarly generated. Also they have been working on it for a long time one way or the other so there probably isn't that much to actually do.

?300,000 in 24 hours isn't bad going. Not mch coverage on this around the world though ... so maybe people really arn't that bothered?

I'd say it was a fairly British game, it featured on the BBC website.

Hmm ... I'm starting to think this is not going to happen tbh, yes there is quite a while yet till the funding deadline, but I can see it topping out at a certain amount and then that's it.

Obviously Elite is not held in such high regard as I thought it was, its not on any of the top gaming websites main pages, even on CVG they haven't bothered 'pinning' it to the front page.

For me at least this is the biggest gaming news story of the year, so why does it seem that nobody is actually that bothered?

Because a lot of people don't know what it is, you have to be from a certain generation to know about it. Most posters on here now wouldn't know what a speccy was if you strapped it to a brick and beat them senseless with it.

Yeah, the initial rush is from, I dunno, people over 35? that have been gaming their whole life. I backed it instantly but once that rush is over what do you have left? Chris Roberts' Space Citizen has a super impressive video showig what the game is so eve people who don't know what Wing Commander or Privateer are can still look at that and be impressed. If you don't know what Elite is; if you never experienced it then you are not going to be even remotely impressed by Braben's pitch. I only just realised this. The initial nostalgia made me think this would easily happen but now, unless he has some super-impressive video presentation ready to go, I can't see this happening.

There was a pitch? Some reused image from the 20th anniversary and nothing. Unless you watched the BBC report and even they it was just the original Elite.
