Interesting read.
Wasnt there a rumour a while back about one of the major manufacturers pulling out of the console race? I didnt give it any more thought as it was just pure speculation but we've known for a while now that Sony is in financial dire straits as a whole. Perhaps it is time they concentrated on other brands in their lines and simply deliver software to other console platforms.
It worked well enough for Sega, despite some shovelware in the early years I think they've finally found a decent outlet for their back catalogue of franchises and I would see no reason why Sony couldnt do the same.Comment

Considering they were the only hardware manufacturer this generation to openly support REGION FREE encoding on all games (bar one by Atlus), I'd rather like to see them continue. Nintendo even implemented it on handhelds they're so bad!Originally posted by noobish hat View Post

Another possibility would be if Apple were to purchase Sony. I think its been well rumored they have been wanting to get into the console market for a good while now and are probably the only company in the world with enough financial clout to mount a serious challenge to Microsoft, now that really would be interesting.Comment

I don't think Sony can afford NOT to release PS4. The PlayStation brand is one of their most valuable assets, and seeing as PS3 has been a money drain for so many years, I expect they want to see some return on it. And if they manage to make Sony Entertainment Network intuitive, content rich and cheap enough; PS4 could be a gateway to a steady money supply. Digital entertainment delivered over the net is a very cost-efficient and safe revenue stream, as long as you have a connection to the consumers.Originally posted by nonny View Post
If Apple wants to kill the console market, they will do so just fine by their own. Though I suspect they are more than happy with their current set-up. Just imagine if Apple were to do that, we would have a new generation of console every 6-12 months
On a more serious note i agree i think Apple in the console market could potentially be a complete Nightmare as although i was joking can anyone really expect Apple to be content with a new console every 5-7 years? I dont think so.
