OK, are these to 3DS as WiiU is to Wii? i.e. backward compatible but essentially next-gen?

Do we know if it plays DS games? Nintendo sometimes drop a gen of backward compatibility when upgrading.
And anyone know the answer to my question about the c-stick. Is it effectively the circle pad pro (and so will work with RE etc.) or is it a new function?
I wonder how many more new hardware specific games we'll see. I don't remember there being any DSi-only games announced prior to actual release of the system (that could be just poor memory though?). They seriously need a proper name for this thing.

I'll end up buying two if the software will be good enough (US and JPN, though for the Japanese one I'll wait to see if a capture kit becomes available); Xenoblade alone it's not enough to justify it. I'm disappointed that Nintendo didn't took the opportunity to do a more thorough redesign of the handheld, the C stick and additional shoulder buttons don't look particularly comfortable, and I fear that pressing the ZR and ZL will lead to many unwanted R/L presses. Also, just exactly what Nintendo need, more naming confusion.
