I only chose to upgrade to X'Ls for the kids' eyesight. Just felt the larger screen was going to be better for them.

Prefer ther form factor in the hand of the normal one though.

The distance they hold the screen at is the main important factor when it comes to eyesight and eyestrain. Although a larger screen may mean that they do how it further away.

Is it relatively trivial to transfer your digital purchases from your old 3DS to your new one? Do your 3DS Ambassador titles such as the GBA games transfer across? Do you have to make sure you download every title onto your regular 3DS in order to transfer them (I don't actually have every Ambassador title downloaded onto my machine)?

I had my original 3DS for about 6 months and sold it to find an XL and I've already spent more time on it than I did the original. The big screen makes the 3D alot better in my opinion but its the comfort of it in my hands compared to the 3DS that pleases me most. I often found myself with aching fingers but the XL never gives me any of that -even with Kid Icarus!

Yes, all those transfer as well. I do have streetpass issues that I haven't fixed yet which were caused by the transfer.

The advantages of the original 3DS over the XL:
1. The XL's screen makes the relatively low (by modern standards) resolution of the hardware a bit too obvious.
2. The original 3DS is more convenient as a portable games devices due to its size. Handier for amassing Street Passes.
3. The sliding thumbstick 'nipple' on the original 3DS is slightly more comfortable than the XL's controller.
4. The original 3DS has the Circle Control Pro available for it, if you really must have one.

The advantages of the 3DS XL over the original model 3DS:
1. to ∞.: Literally everything else.

I prefer shiny stuff. I'm quite particular about keeping stuff fresh so I tend to wipe it down after every use before putting it back in the case. A matte finish is for sticky kids / lazy bastards.

Make sure you get a screen protector for the mk1, unless you want permanent marks from the ridges of the touch pad. I sandwich the cloth in there and I still got them.

I just think a shiny surface is completely impractical for something like a handheld where you will be touching it with your fingers a lot. It takes me ages to clean the handheld after use because I'm quite OCD about it being spotless.
