I know that mate, I certainly spend enough hours every day reading about Nintendo and other games

But this is a game starring Yoshi. It is, to all intents and purposes and certainly to the non-hardcore-fan user, a Nintendo game. And they oughtn't to be releasing substandard titles. Yoshi is part of their core brand and while this game doesn't sound bad enough to do real damage - it sounds perfectly competent in many ways - the onus is on Nintendo to set the bar very high indeed.

They should've delayed this by 9 months and brought it in house to EAD to make it something really special.

With the greatest of respect mate, I think you're kind of blowing this out of proportion a little bit.

No one seriously in the know had high expectations for this (from what I could tell), and perspective is needed. this is Yoshi, NOT Pok?mon, Zelda or the SMB. Ergo, not really the major brand you're making it out to be in Nintendo's IP - core gamer or not. Hell, It's not even Donkey Kong or Metroid - both bigger in rep than Yoshi - and I say that as someone who loved the original Yoshi's Island and didn't even think that Yoshi's Story was that bad (and that title got more of a kicking than New Island has thus far, in all honesty).

If EAD was churning this out, there'd be cause for concern. I really don't think it's that big a deal. Sorry - I just don't. You're overreacting. :P

I disagree with your Yoshi perception. Yoshi's Island was Super Mario World 2 and it was a big deal then and it's still hailed as a classic. There is a case to be made that Nintendo has already dropped a load on that IP a couple of times and so expectations should be low but, when billed as a follow-up to a classic like Yoshi's Island, really they should be knocking it out of the park and it's disappointing if they haven't.

Only in the West. It was never given that moniker in Japan. Still doesn't excuse the apparently poor version here though.

But that's just it - EAD didn't develop it so I honestly don't see why the buck stops with them and not Arzest. Third-party devs CAN do Nintendo IP justice (see Retro Studios and their DK/Metroid games).

And no, I don't see Yoshi as a core part of Nintendo IP - not in an era where essentially only Mario/Pok?mon/Zelda make Nintendo any money and anything else is a bonus. People were apathetic towards Yoshi's Story and Yoshi's Island DS (arguably more of a true sequel than New Island, which looks like a rehash) so for me, it's a bit late to start moaning about New Island not being up to par because a third-party couldn't be bothered.

Because if a Nintendo IP is below par, surely it's down to them to do something about it?

Fully agree it's not a big deal. Scores have been mostly fine. Just looks like a game by the.numbers.

I'm quite looking forward to pocket football club in April and Mario Golf in May, not sure if they will float everyones boat but they are right up my alley!

Kirby Triple Deluxe looks magic, also in May.

They can only do so much, no? Tezuka-san was overseeing the last few stages of development.

Arzest have to carry the can for this, not Nintendo. The precedent for third-parties making great games based on Nintendo IP is already there. Nobody can tell me that Arzest didn't know of the standard that has to be aspired to here. Really?

Indeed they can but perhaps they should have questioned outsourcing the game in the first place?

However it's not that big a deal. To be honest, they should have spent time and money not making yet another platform game.

                            I hear that.

Will probably pick up New Island if/when it gets a little cheaper. Waiting for Layton vs Ace Attorney at the end of the month.

Honestly though, I wish that 3D After Burner II would hurry up and get a bloody western release!

I felt really gutted for some of the guys at work... All morning they were sharing how they couldnt wait to get it tomo... and then suddenly a dark cloud appeared as reviews started to come through...

To them, it is a big deal and in some ways i can see why (Super Mario world 2 - Yoshi's Island - was absolutely fantastic so of course anything less then fantastic is going to be a blow to the gut). Having said that from the start i thought this looked pretty standard so havent really been interested - despite loving the hell out of the yoshi.

The thing is the previous one on DS got slagged off to hell & back, & yet when i played it i ended up enjoying it just as much as the one before it. There are far worse games out there, i don't mind more of the same if there are a few new ideas thrown in there too, the giant egg mechanic looks fun at least.
