I feel very lucky in the time that i was born 1981, i was 4years old when i played my first arcade....Track & Field! I remember needing an empty bottle crate to stand on at the arcade (place in glasgow called the modern book shop it had 3 arcade cabinets!) and was held in place by my mum!
Progress went from that age through nearly every console apart from neo geo-and pc engine cause i was poor! Although the book shop had loads of different arcades in it every week almost most memorible being Tiger Road as it was the first arcade game i finihsed twice to get happy ending!

List of consoles and fondest game/stuck in my mind game....
C16- Mr Puniverse just the name sticks in my mind also just like big mac!
C64-Turrican, remember my friend giving me a copy ahem played it for ages just action packed!
    Spectrum 64k-Had too many......
Master System- Game called Spellcaster, although i remember snapping (think it was hang on!) card inside the console.
NES-Mario Bros 3 being a title i couldnt stop playing was just excellent.
MegaDrive-Ahhh Sonic the Hedgehog,Streets of Rage.
    Snes-Ahhhh Mario World,Axelay,Secret of Mana.
Gameboy-God think it was 99quid with tetris and was about 4months before i wanted another game for it! the headphones where cool!
Mega CD-Final Fight CD loved the music, although i did play a lot of prince of persia too.
Amiga 1200-Senisble world of Soccer, 2 player tournaments with my m8s superb.
CD32-Arcade Pool,Superfrog and Alien Breed Tower Assault 2player.
Playstation-Bought on launch with wipeout, just thought it was the fastest game on earth at the time.
Saturn-Always remeber Virtua Fighter 2 being like the arcade it was unreal! Faves being Guardian Heroes and Saturn Bomberman they still get played today!
N64-Mario 64,Zelda OOT/MMask and of course Goldeneye, what can i say!
Dreamcast-Standing outside EB at midinght waiting for it.....Sonic Adventure running on the screen in store.
Neo Geo Pocket Colour-I knew of the neo geo name/legacy/pricing BUT what sold it to me was that Sonic was on it also it was this or a gameboy colour and the newness of this snatched it for me adn sonic.
PS2-Bit of a late comer to it first game i bought Jak and Daxter loved it to bits was such a nice looking well made game.
Cube-Monkey Ball for me, monkey target multiplayer and those damn levels had me hooked.
Xbox-My least played console (at the moment!) in saying that i go back to moto gp 2 a LOT!
GBA/GBA SP-Had a lot of eye strain with the GBA and couldnt wait for the SP to come but i decided to get the torche SP to constant pokemon slagging from my friends.
PC-Finally i got round to building one that performed good first game recently being Call of Duty just stunned me on the quality of it.
Man so many memories, this topic is cool as it brings all them back to your head like the first game you played or the first game that made you go WOW so many benchmark setting moments for me personally! Apologies if its too long

        Brief(ish) list

        Commodore 16.4
        Amstrad CPC 464
Megadrive (first import console as my parents couldnt get a UK one)
        NES ( Wanted Mario 3)
Super Famicom (sold all my nes games and other stuff to buy it)
        First PC - a uber 486 SX 25 (LOL)
Gamegear/Gameboy (neither lasted long and got sold off)
Neo-Geo AES (The dream had come true, sold it about a year later just couldnt afford the games )
Victor Saturn (needed VF and disapointed with Daytona)
Playstation (UK release day ?300 ouch)
PC Engine (My new found love of shmups)
        Asian(Jap) N64
Dreamcast (Day after release cost me ?300 with Pen Pen and July)
NGPC (My love for SNK made me buy it) (might have been before DC)
Supergun (My constant want for SNK games pushed me towards the cheap MVS route and got my hands on a Hyper Neo-Geo 64)
        First Arcade Cabinet (25" Screen)
Daytona Arcade (had to go after a few months just didnt have the room )
Jap Gamecube(Cube + Memory Card + SMB and WR:BS from tronix for ?250ish, it was a special for peeps who used them, seemed like a bargain at the time)
Lost my love for gaming, and sold most my consoles and 600+ Jap games since then.
Couple of PS2's and a Xbox for the shmups.

Now all i care about is VF4 Evo and the shmups and the odd RPG.

Probably forgot about a few things but its been a long time

Woah, do i feel old now or what?!

I'm thirty*cough*something, so easily remember all the crap early "block collision detection" games. Too senile to remember dates but:

Arcades - tabletop Space Invaders! thru to about Street Fighter 2:Super Hyper Double Turbo Ultra Extreme Edition Though i went to the Namco thing down by Big Ben recently and played some more modern arcade machines.
          ZX81 - yeah ok...
Atari / BBC - Doctor Who
VIC20 / Apple ][ / and XT - at least i think they were all about this time. Only really memorable game was Ultima 1-3.
C64 - loads of quality games. Probably my "golden age" of gaming. Finished Elite (to Elite status) on this format.
Amiga / PC gaming - Wolfenstien 3D, Doom, Speedball etc
PCs / PSX - skipped, or only briefly visited earlier consoles. I think i had an arcade phase about this time and Amiga days, also girls, drugs, surfing and other such things.
PS2 / GC / Xbox - touched upon PC/Mac gaming, but gave it over to console gaming due to comfort and convieniance. Quality is patchy nowadays so i really choose what to play with my limited time.

                  I'm another ancient one ~~

Major points of a gaming life :

Crystal Rooms. Brighton High Street - Space Invaders, Moon Cresta

Vic 20 / C64 - Bruce Lee, Lords of Midnight etc.

(long period of little gaming ... only occasional visits to arcades. I actually still had a life then ... somewhere along the line though I found Bubble Bobble & Rainbow Islands both of which had a profound effect on me.)

Master System - Alex Kidd, The Ninja

PC - Doom, Quake, Emulation ---> An important discovery !

Console gaming - check my collection page to see what happened next.

It's much too early for the years (1987 - Present) but they are in the order they were purchased.

Spectrum +2 (Christmas present from my folks)
Atari STe (Have owned about a dozen of these, used mainly for music though.)
                    Atari Falcon 030
Amiga 500 (Syndicate, Cannon Fodder & Protracker 2)
                    Master System 1 (PAL)
Megadrive 1 + Mega CD 1 (Both PAL)
                    Super Famicom (Jpn)
                    PC Engine (Jpn)
                    Gamegear (UK)
                    N64 (Jpn) + V64
                    NeoGeo CD (Jpn)
                    IBM ThinkPad
                    Saturn (PAL)
                    Dreamcast (Jpn)
                    Spectrum 48 x 2
                    Spectrum +

Started out in my "dim and distant" past with one of those "Pong" type games.

Progressed eventually to the Atari 2600 with a good number of games.

Next step up the ladder (so to speak) was the good old Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K with that "glorious" rubber keyed affair... sometimes referred to as the keyboard!!! On the release of the Spectrum+ I bought the upgrade kit and put the "innards" of the rubber keyed Spectrum into the Spectrum+ case and soldered the reset button... which amazingly worked.

Next up I am not sure. Most likely an Atari 800 XL for which I had disk drives and a tape drive. Very nice machine. Even bought a few cartridges for it. I did eventually get hold of the Atari 130 XE which was basically the same machine but with two banks of 64K memory which could be switched. Don't think they ever wrote a game to make use of it.

If it wasn't the Atari it was a Sinclair QL. Not a bad machine really if it wasn't for those microdrives which were not the most reliable of devices.

I then progressed to an Atari 520 STFM (with a single sided drive which was a slight drawback). Got loads of games on that. Even made use of the Midi interface!

Then we move to an Amiga 500. A slight improvement over the ST. Some decent games were realeased for it certainly. I eventually upgraded it with more memory. Not the easiest to fit if I recall correctly.

I did buy the original Atari Lynx and eventually managed to amass about 8 games, one of which was Lemmings which on the screen of the Lynx was something of a challenge as the Lemmings themselves were pretty small!!!

I managed to obtain an Amiga 1200 (with 85 Mb Hard Disk... wow!!!). This was a brand new reduced price item from Tandy about a year after they stopped making the things. Nice little machine. Think I used it maybe once!!

I suspect next was a PC. A 32MB Pentium 200 with 2.5GB Hard Disk (this in 1996 was top of the line... mistake to an extent as it is not that good an idea to buy at the top end of the PC specification maze). Eventaully upgrade with another 4.3 Gb disk and another 32Mb of RAM (for ?120 if I recall correctly... boy was it expensive then).

I think my original Playstation came along next. Not on release though and not even on the release of Gran Turismo though it was a couple of months after the release of that and also on the strenght of that game.

I bought an N64 (green one) towards the end of the life of the machine for a reasonable price and collected a reasonable number of cartridges.

I also bought a Dreamcast. More or less on the strenght of DOA2 though I bought it a while before the game eventually saw the light of day.

PS2 followed, on the strenght of GT3. I bought it about a week or two before the games release. Bought the day that Tokyo Extreme Racer was released for it which game me enough driving fun to last until GT3.

Xbox followed after one price cut with the inevitable Halo and PGR and DOA3 in tow.

Gamecube followed toward the end of last year quickly amassing enough cheap games to eclipse my Xbox collection.

A Gameboy Advance followed soon after.

This year eventually saw the purchase of a Gameboy SP.

Gamecube became multi-region with the advent of Freeloader/Action Replay. Recently I have been able to get the PS2 to accept imports (new case top with disk door and Swap Magic) and get a chipped Xbox.

More recently I managed to (finally????) get a Commodore 64 with disk drive and tape player and a Megadrive with 6 games (really ought to check them out).

remember playing the Star wars arcade game at a very young age, four or five, and it totally blew me away and have been hooked ever since..

Yay, I'm not the only person who owned one. I used to love Exorcist - a Pacman clone that's probably better than the original.

                              Anyway, here's my short history:

                              C16/Plus 4
This was actually my dads machine and it'll always have a special place in my heart. Because of the weaker graphics (It was technically inferior to the C64, Spectrum and everything else) the developers really had to make their games fun and that's exactly what titles like Exorcist, Mr Puniverse, Kickstart, Roller Kong and others were.

                              Commodore 64
My favourite machine of all time. I begged my parents to get me one for my birthday after being blown away by Batman and some other games at a friends halloween party. I got one with Gangsters (Light gun game) and Pitfall 2. This for me, was the golden age of gaming, it was amazing how much freedom games designers had back then and how personal everything was. Not to mention that you could get new games for ?2.99! Favourites include every Dizzy game, Creatures, The Last Ninja 2, Mayhem in Monsterland, X-Out... too many to list. The gaming scene was great in these days. None of the cynicism of today.

                              Super Nintendo
Another favourite. My friends all had Mega Drive's, but I thought I'd go for the SNES to be different and I don't regret it. Coming up from the C64, I remember we were all blown away by the graphics in Mario Allstars and Street Fighter 2 just took over my life like no other game has. We'd stay up all night playing, we'd play it in the arcades, buy the soundtracks, sticker albums... import the new versions. Of course we can't mention the SNES without bringing up Super Play, the greatest game magazine bar none.

                              Playstation
Strangely, my reasons for buying the Playstation are fairly clouded... maybe I just caught up in the hype? Either way, I picked one up with Ridge Racer, Tekken and the hugely under-rated Jumping Flash. It was so exciting seeing all our favourite genres going 3D. Strangely I actually enjoyed the first 2 or 3 years of the consoles life more than the ones that followed. I dunno, once the machine started to get really popular I found the shelves just got filled with shovelware and junk, it got harder and harder to find interesting games, so I tended to go more towards the quirky side. PS1 was always lovely for weird games like Incredible Crisis and Vib Ribbon, that's something the PS2's lacking in a bit.

                              N64
Ever since I saw the footage of Mario 64 running on Bad Influence I was desperate to get hold of one. I don't think anything blew me away as much as playing that game for the first time. The movement/control just felt so real, thanks to the analog stick and the graphics were beautiful. The big N64 game were usually of a far higher quality than on the PSX, but the lack of third party games really got to me... although I did love Mischief Makers and the fabulous Mystical Ninja starring Goemon. That's what the N64 could've done with, more 'hidden gems'. Everyone always had the same selection of games.

                              Dreamcast
Don't kill me, but I wasn't really that interested in Dreamcast when it first launched. I hadn't really been paying much attention to what Sega was up to and they were really playing up the online thing at launch (something I didn't care for) but then one day I came across a demo pod with Crazy Taxi on it. I couldn't quite believe how huge the leap in graphics were, it all looked so alive and smooth. After that I bought some Dreamcast magazines to find out more about the current and upcoming software. MSR, Jet Set Radio, Shenmue, Street Fighter 3... some of the stuff Sega was doing looked amazing, so I bought one and it was the best thing I ever did, really got me back in to gaming. The whole Dreamcast scene was a bit special and it was such a shame when Sega gave up on it. It was hard not to get upset when people started rushing out to buy a PS2 based on hype and little else.

                              GameCube
I got one at the PAL launch. Wave Race Blue Storm was lovely, Luigi's Mansion was great fun for a bit and Monkey Ball was so refreshing, but when the games started to dry up over the summer I began to feel bit annoyed again, especially when the news of Metroid being delayed came about... However, something interesting then happened. We got robbed and one of the things they took was my GameCube and all the games! And while I was very upset at the time it was actually a blessing in disguise (here me out) because shortly after that happened I noticed a lot of people on the net were owning import GameCube's so I thought "Why not buy an import Cube this time instead? Animal Crossing looks amazing and Freeloader will never come out!" so that's what I did, and I've loved the machine ever since then. It was so depressing seeing tiny GC selections in most places, it's amazing how much buying from the US and Japan opens things up. To think I would've missed out on games like Mr Driller Drill Land, Animal Crossing, Cubivores and others. It was also nice being able to get things like PNO3, Mario Golf and the like to tide us over the Summer while there was only junk like Big Mutha Truckers being released in Europe. Even though EAD could do with making more original titles, when it comes to the overall lineup I think the GameCube's far superior to the N64 and may even be comparable to the Dreamcast soon.

                              PS2
I had no interest in the PS2 for the first year. The only games I'd cared for (the Namco stuff) had horrible, horrible PAL conversions and I certainly didn't have the money to import a machine back then. Hell, even the PAL PS2 cost ?299. However, over the years it's proved itself to be a more than worthy machine. Like the PSX before it I've found myself going more towards the quirky stuff like Gitaroo Man and ICO, although I do love the GTA games, I feel they're some of the only titles that really like they couldn't have been done last generation (in 3D at least). It's a shame they've had a somewhat negative effect on the industry, in that everyone thinks violence and darkness is everything now. People need to realise that the GTA games were great because of the freedom the game offered and the ott violence came second.

                              Xbox
Hmm... a modded Xbox is a dream come true, being able to play practically every classic game under the sun I could finally pack away most of my machines. Maybe when the quality of N64 emulation is better even that will go under the bed. However, I can't say I care much for the actual games. I'm not saying they're bad, I'm sure if you like modern Western games then you'll be all over it, but it's all a bit too "Big boys with guns" for my liking. It's not that I'm western-phobic, as I said, my favourite machine of all time is the C64, but I hate first person shooters and most realistic racing games bore the hell out of me. The thing is, I loved games like Panzer Dragoon, Jet Set Radio, Capcom VS SNK 2 Online and the like, but every year the lineup seems to get more and more safe. When Microsoft launched the Xbox they promised it would be a completely different experience to the PC and even said they wouldn't release a keyboard for that very reason, but here in 2003, what games were they pushing at XO3? Ports of Half Life, Doom 3 and Deux EX. A far cry from their announcement of 8 Sega exclusives back in 2001. Sorry if I sound overly negative! I do think a modded machine is a must for everyone, but I'm just not personally interested in the main console much, because realism aint my thing.

Uh, so that's my story. Not so short, eh?

Max M, Creatures on the C64!!! OMG how good was that game?!!! Talk about flash from the past, the music was really catchy too. Think I will do a search, maybe somebodys got a fansite. Last Ninja 2 was cool though, wonder if it still holds up today?
