HMV set to go into administration

This really is concerning news when you think that this could mean all the major and independent electronic shops have vanished from the high street. If you want to buy a Videogame or Blu Ray on the high street, you've got a supermarket & that's about it.

Fond memories of HMV though. Started my love of films, buying Widescreen VHS tapes in my teens, when every video shop only stocked 4:3. Also the best game offers were in HMV, during the dying Dreamcast & PS1 days, they discounted their stock to silly levels. I left the Oxford Street store with 4 Dremcast controllers & 2 VMU's for about ?20!

It said on the radio this morning they will be trading as normal so gift cards should work if that statement was accurate

Apparently missus has been delving into this a little & staff have been advised to tell Customers that they are not being accepted but may be again once the Administrators have done what they need to & decide the way forward from there so at the moment we are in limbo with them.

Just been to the Watford store and its open but with alot less staff than normal and behind the counter there are signs telling people that they cannot accept gift cards etc but seems every second person is trying to use them and getting irate when they say they can't which is a shame for the staff

But the Watford store did have a 32GB vita card and it was on the blue cross sale just a shame the original RRP was ?80 and blue cross brought it to ?60, online the price was ?60 and blue cross took it to ?45 which is a semi-bargain

Same here used to be a great shop for various Hong Kong and Easter Heroes classic Kung Fu films . Shame but these days I hardly ever use the shop , bar Christmas shopping . The likes of Amazon have just killed shops like this now

Why don't more manufacturers create their own online sales portals and cut out the retailers entirely? Like Valve did with their software.

If HMV do go under, then here in Guernsey the only place you can buy movies and games will be our relatively tiny Blockbuster, and there'll be nowhere to buy CDs. This sucks as while I do occasionally buy online, I prefer walking down to town and browsing, maybe picking up something else while I'm in store. Wont help our rising unemployment either, our highstreet is turning into a ghost town.

Better service, more choice and better prices = end of story . I'm amazed people even bother with the likes of HMV these days

Like others though, HMV was my one oasis when out shopping with the missus. What now? Tesco has little to offer me outside of the cereal aisle and even that's not as fun as it used to be without the toys.
