Not many good JRPG's these days but the best ones released relativley recently are probably...

    Ni No Kuni
    Tales of Vespiria
    Pokemon Black/White 2
    Lost Odyssey
    Paper Mario Sticker Star
    Xenoblade
    The Last Story
    Eternal Sonata
    Final Fantasy XIII 2
    Resonance of Fate
    Valkyria Chronicles
    Disegea 3 and 4
    Persona 4 Golden
Fire Emblem Awakening (although this is just a guess, as its not out here for a few month).

Shadowrun on the SNES. It's Australian. And awesome. Proper old school console RPG.

(well, he did say any platform)

If you have a PS3, try Suikoden 1 from the US PSN store. Beautiful game. Very sad in places.

Or if it must be 360, Phantasy Star IV on that crappily emulated Sega compilation by Backbone. Worst commercial emulation I've personally seen, but Phantasy Star IV is good enough to look past it.

Those are hardly RPGs or JRPGs. They are all turn-based strategy games, with the exception of Pokemon, but its core mechanics are the battle system and collection, very far from a RPG.

They feature levelling up, collecting loot, epic stories (well ok maybe Pokemon doesn't have this) and typical Japanese quirk. They are what I call RPG's and they are certainly Japanese so I'm sure plenty of people call them JRPG's

I'd say Pokemon is an RPG, but the rest are more strategy games than Final Fantasy, which he wanted.

Also, I second Suikoden on PSN. Chrono Trigger on DS/Wii is a classic.

From modern JRPGs I liked Xenoblade quite a lot.

Levelling and collecting loot doesn't really make a game an RPG, and people should really stop calling everything coming from Japan a RPG when that game simply isn't one.

Final Fantasy 3 on IOS or Android is definitely worth a punt

On 360 Eternal Sonata and Resonance of Fate. Both are really underrated, especially Resonance of Fate. Beware though RoF is really hard. Took me around 120 hours to get 1000g IIRC.

On PS3 I'd say Ni No Kuni (playing atm) and on Vita Persona 4 Golden

Agree with above, Eternal Sonata is a great game.

What defines an RPG then? I mean technically an RPG is something like a table top Dungeons and dragons game where the player plays a "role" and becomes a character. But no video games are like that.

He asked for a JRPG like final Fantasy. While some of the games I mentioned lean more towards turn based strategy I don't think that makes them any less RPG's. Dungeons and Dragons is actually a turn based game you know, as are other traditional role playing games.

The closest thing to a traditional RPG experience in a video game is probabaly something like the Fighting Fantasy games on IOS. So if you look at it that way then Final Fantasy has never been an RPG series either.

Surely a RPG (Role Playing Game) is simply a game where you assume the role of a character which you customize and decide their fate? WoW, Kingdoms of Almur and Elder Scrolls define RPG for me.

Final Fantasy revolutionized the brand, the above games made it their own.

Not going to disagree with this, and the fact that the Final Fantasy series are all linear games and don't have you choosing a path or anyone's fate proves my point that JRPG's don't really follow what an RPG is at all. Hence why all the games I originally mentioned are classed as JRPG's.

Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2 is one of the greatest RPG's ever created. I spent 90 of the best hours of my life playing that game, wish i could unremember it and do it all again. Also worth going through the Dragon Quest 4-6 trilogy on the DS.

Also agree that Xenoblade is fantastic too, playing it at 1080p on Dolphin is wonderful.
