The Cauldron games were ridiculously hard. Loved being a pumpkin in the sequel though. A massive number of games of that generation were really tough although I agree with Saturn-gamer on many of them being hard due to being as good as broken and without any saves.

Jet Set Willy was torture eventually. Amazing how we had the patience for games like that back in the day.

I chatted with the devs on Cauldron for an Antiriad feature, and they said it was hard because when they were playing it while making it, they had cheats on, and never actually played it through without them. Which highlights how different the dev environment was in the 1980s. Antiriad was a response to Cauldron, since they made sure to play it through from start to finish, without cheats, to make sure it was winnable.

From interviews, it seems Nintendo was the first company to insist that all games be completable - devs had to send video tapes in proving this before they manufactured the cartridges.

I'm sure there's plenty of impossible classic games.

MD Fantasia is probably the hardest game I've ever played.
        Kept you waiting, huh?

I never found F355 Challenge that hard. More gruelling to stay away when playing it.

The lights turn green and off I go. I was pretty good at GT2 so I could probably be a racing driver in real life cus that game's like total realism. Then I realise that I can't even go round the first corner and the reality of how hard this game is sets in. I'm not really into racing games so it never really bothered me that much (I find Forza 4 too hard, Driver is about my limit) but seeing friends of mine who are made about racing games struggle with this said it all.
The Dreamcast version's controller support wasn't the greatest thats for sure. Track down the Arcade cab though, and with the wheel its the best thing ever.

Im surprised the nes didnt put me off gaming for good as there where a lot of very hard games i owned for it, cobra triangle, ikari warriors, snake rattle and roll, and Simon's quest to name a few.

my first game for the system was a real baptism of fire:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles still haunts me to this day, i remember getting quite far in to the game a real challenge as you had four lives to finish the whole game and two of them lives had crap weapons (raph I'm looking at you.) The game was a maze full of re-spawning baddies and very poor signposting, i always came up against the same brick wall about half way through (an un-passable chasm). I recently went back to look at a play-thorugh as it bugged me why i couldn't get past this one part all them years ago.

It turns out you needed to pick up a strange icon shaped like a man that gave you the ability to chuck ropes between buildings??? of course!

the youtube generation doesn't know its born. back in my day if you where stuck on a game it was tough luck. if you where lucky you might get a guide in mean machines or computer and video games but nine times out of ten you where on your own, or at the mercy of that one kid who had got done the imposable the smarmy little git.

I am fairly sure I didn't complete more than 0.5% of games in the 8bit days. (Mastersystem) I know for a fact that just about every zx spectrum game i had was impossible.

Later in the day, yeah Super GnG was a killer.

Metroid Prime, some uber pirate thing put me on my arse.

Zelda, Windwalker I couldn't get past a rock monster boss.

Mario sunshine was very hard for me.

I'm not very good at games, so I guess most stuff was hard!

A lot of difficult games i played were probably down to me playing them when I was a kid. No GameFaqs, You Tube Videos or Forums were available back in the 80's or early 90's. If I played them now, I might be able to get past them with no hassle!

                    California Games - Master System
To be exact, the Foot Bag game where you have to control the guy as you're attempting to keep the sack high in the air. I played this game for real a few years ago at work, late at night in the office car park and i was just as ****!

                    Demon's Souls
The hardest game I've ever played. I don't care what people say when they mention that it's easy when you stop and attempt to second guess enemies or possible traps. Still love the game however!

                    WipEout 2097 - PSone
I've not been able to fully complete any of the WipEout games in their full fat Pirahna mode and as I get older, I don't think I ever will. This guy has however...

                    Ferrari F355 Challenge - Arcade & Dreamcast
The master of all hard modes in my eyes. I'm able to play this in the Arcade on full simulation mode (And have the Print Out's to prove it!) but when I got the Dreamcast version and had to use a pad against AI, I was completely useless. My one saving grace for the home port was being able to beat every single one of the players I raced against online. F355's very novel use of ghost racing, where you don't see the result in-till the end of the race, was a nail biting affair.

                    Ikaruga
Had this on Dreamcast import when I got swept up on the hype train, the Gamecube port and the XBLA release. Never got past the second level but if i'm honest, I never really tried.

I was that good at Wipeout 2097 as a kid. I played it so much I could do that course perfectly in that craft. Only that course mind and I can't remember lap times.
Now I can still complete that and the first game in one sitting winning every race. I can't perfect lap like I used to though. Plus I need to sit right up to the screen to be able to react to it.

Hello, the ZX Spectrum library was full of "one hit wonders" like Dinamite Dan, Abu Simbel Profanation, Manic Miner.
Gun smoke and Sunset riders are very hard games.

OMG, Viewpoint is definitely mine. I remember sitting like a zombie for days memorising every attack formation. I almost passed out when I finally completed it. I still have the save on my AES memory card!
