Question is for those with the facilities for 3d gaming. Do you actually utilise the 3d?

Not on the 3DS, no. The fact that the viewing angle is so narrow means it's completely incompatible with playing it on the bus (or jerking the handheld around while playing MK7 online, lol).
On PS3 I only have 2 3D compatible games so far, Arkham City and Child of Eden. For reference I have a 50 inch Panasonic plasma with active shutter glasses. Arkham City is a very dark game and with dark 3D glasses on it's very f*cking dark indeed. The effect is pretty cool as you fly around, but in indoors sections feels pretty much redundant. Child of Eden is great, very cool use of 3D and it has a lot of 'wow' moments. Probably the best use of 3D I've yet seen, I think the fact that the graphics are basically abstract really helps.
But do I actually USE 3D? No, not really. If a game has it I'll flip it on and check it out and maybe play with it on, but it's really a pointless effect to my mind. 3D stuff seems to have around 3 planes at different depths, and that's it. There's no subtlety to the effect at all, and frankly after a short time I find the effect to be quite headache inducing. It's just a novelty really. I break out Child of Eden with the Move and the glasses when people are over but that's about it.
TV manufacturers clearly thought they'd be able to sell 3D like HD, but that's not the case at all. Its benefits are frankly questionable and its drawbacks manifold.
edit: Waving the Move around with my 3D glasses on I actually feel like some kind of techno shaman. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing.Last edited by wakka; 02-04-2013, 10:51.

I'm yet to find anything on the 3DS where it's been comfortable to play with, and also has enough of a beneficial effect to keep it on, and on the consoles there's not really been any 3D games that I'm interested enough in to play through it with. When I first got a 3D setup I did about half of Arkham City with it on and it got on my nerves after a while (both the game and the 3D); since then I've upgraded both the projector and the glasses, but still haven't gone out of my way to try it again. Wearing glasses on top of glasses is a major annoyance factor for me.

Passive > active for gaming sadly, you just lose the whole "Simulview" capability with passive.
If you have not played Child of Eden in 3D you are really not seeing the game as it should be seen - it's one of the PS3 games I will NOT play any other way. Same for Killzone 3 actually. RR7 in 3D is okay but not as good as I expected. 2D will do me for that, it's just a pain you can't switch mid-game.
So 3DS/XL and PS3 when capable to answer the original question. My 3DS stays on 3D except when the game is 2D, like Fluidity: Spin cycle.

Super Star Strike/Dust HD looks amazing in 3D. Warriors Orochi 3 also suffers from the same issues with darkness that plague other games, and is the excuse I'm sticking to as to why I haven't played it much.
I'm still hoping Nintendo pull one out of the bag and update the WiiU to support 3D. Sadly unlikely though.
