Looks like Quest 2 is still holding its own

Myself and the missus don't really 'do' Xmas. So much goes into buying for everyone else and the kids that we slipped into not bothering with anything for ourselves a few years back so no presents by the tree each year for either of us.

This weekend I was given permission to get PSVR2, she recalled it coming out earlier this year. But having a Quest 3 means that the PSVR2 would be bought solely on the weight of Horizon and Switchback as the Resi's aren't experiences worth the level of asking price and GT7 is still GT7 regardless of POV. So still no present this year Damn you Sony!

Sony need to pull their finger out that they haven't announced any new first-party stuff is just leaving the psvr2 out there to die at retail, its first Christmas on shelves shouldn't be relying on games that came out 11 months ago.

You wonder what Sony are playing at with its first party studios, as it's looking pretty bare on PS5 next year too, the only game we know about are the Last of Us 2 remake a a Wolverine game and Helldivers 2.

I don't really understand why they don't have a small dedicated studio for it that focuses on adding VR modes to first party games similar to how modders are doing this stuff for all sorts on PC. It doesn't need to be native play, I'd likely crumble for the perspective in most games alone and some remasters of a couple of PSVR1 key players.

Expanding on that thought - there's been a fair bit known about what the various studios at Sony are working on for some time and Era even have a long running thread tracking things. Then you have all of the leaks on top of that giving us a relatively robust picture of the various AAA's, GAAS etc titles Sony has bubbling along even if they're years out.

Really notably is the absolute void that PSVR2 exists in. None of the titles seem to be for the headset or likely to support it which if that bears itself out is something Sony should be absolutely hung out to dry on. It really should at this point be a default that every title contain at least a VR viewpoint option

As a side bit to my leaving PSVR2 though, I've once again ordered a PSVR1. Onyl cost £50 and whilst it's undoubtedly missing accessories I can get most essential stuff as an when cheap. I'll have enough already to at least be able to revisit simple stuff like Astrobot and can build up to the champ - Blood and Truth

The launches of headsets such as PSVR2 and Quest 3 couldn't halt the tide it seems as in the US VR headset sales fell by 40% in 2023

We had the perfect storm of a lockdown and loads of hype surrounding the Quest 2 making it a must have item in 2021, 2022, I wouldn't see it as death knell for VR More a rebalancing after a wii style event. Sony havent kept up with the PSVR2 releases and the cost makes it much less of an impulse purchase. The quest 3 hasn't offered enough reasons for most people to upgrade, the cost of it, no exclusives at launch, and games still coming out that don't make use of the extra power like the recent Asgard's Wrath 2, are all massive miss steps by meta.

Asgard's Wrath 2 Is out now. It's included free with every Quest 3, but there are no Quest 3 graphical upgrades at launch.

Yep, I can't understand pushing Asgard's Wrath 2 alongside Quest 3 and then not using the headsets power at all.
I could easily imagine finding a Quest 4 an awkward proposition given the software situation but so far Quest 3 has been almost too spot on a headset for me

For you it may have been spot on but for the casual market meta kind of failed to give a reason to update on mass, the numbers the quest 2 are still selling shows this. We've been over the pros and cons of the quest 3 but the poor battery life and lack of new compelling software and inflated retail price are its 3 big negatives. For quest 4 to be a success, they need to get the price back down and the battery life back up.

Yep, I'd still owned a Quest 2 at the time I think the range of improvements would have been far too minor to warrant paying out again. Even without one I fence sat for a while on it given I'd already played several of the older big games. So far though it seems close enough to the mark that I think I'd struggle to warrant a future upgrade. Presumably a Quest 4 would add a wider FOV, more power and resolution to the mix but the reality is that very few games make use of them and instead are too low budget to tax things or purposefully aim to be as wide audience reaching as possible. Other things like eye tracking etc, to be honest, I don't think will become common place any year soon because it means cutting too many users out of the mix so even if included I don't expect they would see much use. All in all I imagine this is the boat many with a headset in a cupboard already are in, like the quickly disappearing Wii audience. Getting RRP's down definitely seems to be the big area needed so the rising prices isn't reassuring
