I'd get an XL with X or Y for now. Even if you got MH, you likely couldn't buy the CPP to go with it anyway. Plus playing those two games at the same time is plain dumb.
As if people actually use the CPP J0e.

I used it for RE Revelations and I'm very glad I did.

        I use it for:

        Ace Combat

        Biohazard: Revelations

        Kid Icarus: Uprising

        Metal Gear Solid 3

        Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate

        Monster Hunter 4

That's six games that are vastly improved by using it. There are a bunch of others that use it, which I am yet to play too. The CPP is a good thing.
        Kept you waiting, huh?

I would rather developers just designed games that didn't require a second Circle Pad. I mean it makes the system look completely ridiculous.

It does and I can't possibly imagine how huge the XL is with the CCP but some games really benefit from the second stick. The real issue is that the 3DS should have had the second stick built in from day one.

I completed Resident Evil: Revelations without it, and I can honestly say that I did not notice it's absence.

I just ordered a 2DS for my son for Xmas - ?89 at Tesco (using a ?10 off voucher for first time ordering) he's going to love it

I never had any problems with MH on the psp with just the shoulder button to centre the camera, MH3 on the 3/2ds is fine without the second stick, though i can see how some games would benefit.

As has been said however, it should of been built in from the start, theres enough room on all the iterations of the console so theres no excuses. Its just laziness, money grabbing, or both.

I'm thinking of picking up a 2DS for a handful of 3DS and DS games, but two of the DS games are Hotel Dusk and The Last Window, not sure how well they would work/look on the console.

The screen is exactly the same as the 3ds, just without the 3d slider.

Are Hotel Dusk and The Last Window fully touch-screen? Could the new control layout cause any problems?

Why not just get a 3DS instead?

I would turn off the 3D. The XL's screen size is nice, however I'm not prepared to pay ?175 to play a few games on a large screen.

Well then there's the option of the normal 3DS. Not sure the difference in price for the 2DS makes it worth while. If you were prepared to spend that much money, I'd be suggesting going for a normal 3DS or XL even if you're not planning on using the 3D.

That said, I'm totally not speaking from experience as I haven't held the 2DS in my hands. Maybe I'd think it is awesome. So take my advice with a massive pinch of salt.

Fair enough then. I'd argue that some 3DS games lose a lot without the 3D effect, Luigi's Mansion for example looks way better with the extra depth. Also, the design of the 3DS looks way better than the 2DS imo. I don't think playing Hotel Dusk is as good on the 2DS as you have to hold the console sideways, could turn out to be pretty uncomfortable.
