I'm no stranger to backing the wrong horse, having owned a Saturn and Dreamcast, so I've no problem with getting value from a 'dead' console.
But the 2DS and 3DS don't split their userbase as much as a Wii-U+gamepad and a Wii-U+pro controller would.
Devs might think 3D is less important if there are tons of 2DSs doing the rounds but 2D has been available on the 3DS since the beginning so they're are already acquainted with it.
Whatever people's opinions of the gamepad, it's an integral part of the Wii-U experience. The Wii-U is the gamepad.
Nintendoland showed some neat stuff granted, but overall the games are hardly making it essential...unless of course you simply have to play all your games remotely via the pad.
All i'm saying is that given how its been utilized so far, its not that much of a stretch.
They could probably knock WiiU's out for ?130 if they took that approach...in the long run i cant see any other way for the WiiU to succeed, given the recent release of next gen.
They obviously cant rely solely on the hardcore/core gamers either.
Maybe mario kart will turn it around, and maybe nintendo will price the WiiU even lower without making any such sacrifice, but the lesson for nintendo for me would be make decent tech, and drop the novel approach.
It worked with the wii because the remotes were cheap, and the disappointing hardware configuration was negated by the perfect price point of ?179.99 with zelda in tow.Last edited by PaTaito; 21-01-2014, 04:40.

I agree with you, PaTaito. However, I'm not arguing in terms of the usefulness of the gamepad but in terms of what the system comprises. Heck, it's what a whole bunch of people think is the Wii-U! Take that away and what are you left with? A machine that won't be able to play a bunch of Wii-U games properly, if at all.
They can cut the price as the components will get cheaper over time as well - do a Sony and put a worse screen in the controller later on, for example. Or they can manufacture the console itself more cheaply.
And the Pro Controller is an opt-in accessory. You buy it because you specifically want to use it. It doesn't come with the Wii-U and I'm pretty sure there are no games that demand it(are there?).
At the moment, devs can at least concentrate on supporting the Wii-U gamepad as a bare minimum. What you're proposing is that they either:
a) support the gamepad in a lame, gimmicky way(if they're not doing that already) for people with a regular Wii-U
b) add in support for the Pro Controller for people who have the Pro Controller-only Wii-U
We all accept that 3rd party support for the Wii-U is crap. Nintendo mustn't do anything to alienate those guys any further. This isn't the PS2 where all that hard work would be paid off in sales.

Seems to be the consoles that sell like ****, or flop are the ones that hold their value , so maybe the Wii U is a good investment after all lol
Which is why buying an expensive piece of hardware with no great games is foolish.
With microsoft and sony you at least know for a fact that games are going to roll in thick and fast.
Without big 3rd party support though, what value can any console really be?...especially with 1st party titles so slow to trickle ouLast edited by Team Andromeda; 21-01-2014, 08:43.

?60, that ain't cheap for a base machine.
So even the 'so called' best consoles aren't that good investments if its all about returning ones moneyLast edited by Team Andromeda; 21-01-2014, 09:25.
